Eaten grey unidentified substance in my buttercream, help!

Hi, I have just gotten a new stand mixer and used it for the first time today. I made chocolate cupcakes and used the flexi blade. This went great with no issues. I then made vanilla buttercream again using the flexi blade, and I then frosted the cakes. While eating i noticed tiny a bit grey in my buttercream. My toddler has eaten one, is this poisonous?! Will I throw the rest out? I checked the flexi blade and haven't noticed anything on it but it is grey and I'm suspecting that is the culprit. If it had been a trace of dark chocolate cake mixture still on the blade culd that have caused the grey?

Yes, very weak chocolate buttercream (so I assume chocolate cake batter) is an unappetizing grey.
If you can find another bit, squish it. See if its cake squishable, or something more solid.
Could it have come off the inside of the bowl?

Thank you for replying. It is nothing solid, just tiny little swirls of grey. If it was reminents of dark chocolate batter, would it not turn light brown mixed with the cream coloured buttercream? The bowl was immaculate after making the cake but i quickly washed the flexi beater so possible there could have been tiny amount of mixture in the groove. I was just alarmed it is grey and only in tiny areas.

It was also very much light grey, no brown hues at all.

Were any blueberries involved at any stage?

I'm sorry, I have nothing useful.to add; I just have to tell you to try the grey stuff, it's delicious!

If it’s brand new did you wash it before you used it? If not that’s your answer.

Oneofthosewsillydays · 09/11/2022 13:53

🤣 yes I washed it thoroughly before use... and no blueberries

When researching online I found this:

"'This happened to me with my first artisan kitchenaid! It was loud and was leaking oil. I returned it after calling kitchenaid. The one I just got it happened at first but I cleaned with vinegar and it’s good now. If you wash your bowl and then dry it, it will not have any gray coming off. BUT if you take a small bit of shortening and rub it in the bowl with a paper towel, you will see it come off. Use vinegar to clean your bowl thoroughly then wash with hot soapy water and it should do the trick. I had to wash my new bowl 3 times with vinegar to get it all off, but it works. Hope this helps.'*

Reckon this is my answer, they really should tell you in the Instructions to do this before first use!

Does anybody know If I have to ditch the cupcakes? My toddler helped me make them and will be upset, but I'd rather that than an upset tummy!
