So yesterday I cooked my first ever Organic, Free Range, (expensive) chicken....

and I was VERY impressed.

Was umming about paying >£6 for a 1.5kg bird but thought would give it a go.

First major difference was the total lack of fat etc that came out during the roasting. There is normally tons of stuff - just enough to make some gravy with this time!

It tasted great!

Also - no shrinkage. It was small but LOADS of meat. We used all the breast meat between the 4 of us (all adult portions) and I had over 3/4lb left of leg meat etc. Today we are having Chicken & prawn stir fry & rest will go in tomorrows sandwiches / salad lunches.

I am now a convert

£6 for organic is pretty cheap, too! I normally pay £6 for free range but nearer £10 for organic.

smeeinit · 29/01/2008 18:09

welcome new convert! may you have many happy years cooking freerange!

Ledodgy · 29/01/2008 18:10

I've got one in the fridge so am looking forward to it. I actually ordered a non organic free range one as it was cheaper but Tesco online kindly substituted it for an organic free range one which would have been £8.29 at no extra cost.

dippydeedoo · 29/01/2008 18:10

Oh that does sound good.....was it a lot more tasty? did u roast it? and did u use anything extra or just cook it as norm?ive been waiting for someone to say smething like this.

i have been slowly switching over to free range. i had been buying tesco's 'willow farm' chickens as slightly better than their cheper ones. this weeks offering is a 'tesco finest, corn fed free range chicken' it looks lovely, am hoping it tastes lovely.

Milliways · 29/01/2008 18:13

It was a Sainsbury's Taste the Difference one. Hope it wasn't a special price! They did have another brand that was about £10 but not SAinsbury's own. They also had some frozen free range chickens that were

i bought organic free range the last couple of weeks, and it is significantly better taste wise

bought two on friday, at a cost of £8 , made roast dinner for 4, soup for 4 ( at least 2 bowls each ) and stir fry with left over veg and potatos.. so £8 to feed 4 people 3 meals is excellent value and you can have a clear conscience too !

everyone's a winner!

as long as you took it home in your reusable jute carrier

Well done Misdee - it is a shock to the wallet though isn't it.

DH had his first pay packet since last April this week, so I went mad!!

Sainsburys had sold out and so had Morrisons. If I was watching the programme as a Dirctor of those companies, I'd have been bulk buying the damn things for ever. It had to be a man

Organic chicken tastes like I remember chicken tasting when I was a kid. Rub a bit of oil into the skin and some salt and pepper and it is FAB!

3littlefrogs · 29/01/2008 18:20

All my family - teenagers and DH - noticed the difference straight away. I only buy free range now. It is worth it. There is very little fat/water and the taste is so much better.

misdee · 29/01/2008 18:23

i started switching before the 'chicken out' thingy (never watched the programmes), and the difference is noticable.

todays one was £6.50 for a 1.8kg chicken.

i have to say most of their freerange and organic chickens were gone, wasnt much choice. loads of cheap ones left though

MakemineaGandT · 29/01/2008 21:06

Totally agree - we went free range ages ago and haven't looked back. This weekend's chicken was £10 and did:

Roast chicken for 3
Cold chicken with roasted root veg for 3
6 portions of chicken and veg soup
2 portions of chicken noodle soup

So, I reckon 14 servings for £10 isn't bad!

And SO much nicer to eat

loucee · 29/01/2008 21:51

Me too, tonight we had a Tesco Organic Free Range chicken and it was lovely. I'm not just saying it I really noticed a difference and now you say it yes there was a lot less squidgy stuff in the bottom of the tray.

I got a bargain, I ordered online and asked for the smallest weight chicken , guide price was £6 and my note was asking for not more than £7. The one they delivered was £13.50 so they refunded me the difference!

Scramble · 29/01/2008 22:54

I can never get a free range one, none left, I got some of the willow farm stuff today instead.

funnypeculiar · 29/01/2008 22:56

Yes, we bought one from the butcher rather than supermarket for our roast - meat texture is always the thing that gets me with free range stuff - so much solid-er - I guess because they get to use their little muscles

Scramble · 29/01/2008 23:13

Ach I know I should track down a butcher, there are a few good ones, greengrocers are a rarity though.
