Mixers : Kenwood? KitchenAid? Magimix? Other?

If you have (or covert!) a stand mixer, what do you have or recommend?
Which attachments do you use? I'm thinking mainly bread doughs and baking, but also occasonal blending and chopping/food processing.

The Kenwood and Kitchenaids look to be similar basic designs, but the magimix seems very different. What's it like for mixing?

I have a kenwood chef. My most used attachment is the multi mill. I use it for curry pastes, salsas, pesto etc. It comes with 4 jars that are also useful for storing things in the freezer. I used to avoid using my blender because it was a pain to clean and I think I use the multimill more often than the mixing bowl these days. I also have the pasta rolling attachment which is brilliant but expensive.

I have a KitchenAid stand mixer which I love. It’s tough to recommend though as I’ve never used another stand mixer so don’t know what the competition is like! I don’t have any attachments as I don’t need any. I use it mostly for baking (cake batters, bread dough, meringues, buttercream etc). I have a separate blender and food processor and wouldn’t want to consolidate that into one machine. Is the Magimix you are looking at a stand mixer or the food processor? Because I view a stand mixer and food processor and two separate appliances with a distinct use case and little overlap in what I would use them for. I use my food processor to make hummus, pastry, chimichurri and pesto type things, chopping vegetables.

I don’t have any experience with their stand mixer or food processor, but based on my experience with their kettle and coffee machines, Sage could be worth a look too.

Love my KitchenAid! I use it for dough fairly often (with the hook attachment), also have the whisk and paddle for baking and various sweet things. I get a lot of use out of it and it's a real workhorse

I've recently bought a kitchen Aid and I'm loving it so far, I've previously only had a vintage Kenwood so I can't comment on the modern ones.

The Kmix is the most similar to the Kitchen Aid in style but from what I've read it's not the best Kenwood.

InsertPunHere · 30/10/2022 09:14

I love my Kitchen Aid but I recognise you pay more for the style - they are gorgeous machines.

I think Kenwoods are just as good, but I do prefer the design of the Kitchen Aid.

StillNotWarm · 30/10/2022 09:43

I've been told not to focus on the price - it's a gift that is supposed to last a long time, so should be the right thing.

I like the look of the KitchenAid, but know a Kenwood (and this is what the giftee has).
Will go do further digging into those 2, as it does sound like they are the 2 major brands.

I have the K mixer and I love it I bake a lot and use all of the attachments regularly.

greenacrylicpaint · 30/10/2022 09:55

bosch mum

manages bread dough as well as fine stuff.
lots of useful attachments

cairnsarethebest · 30/10/2022 09:57

I have a kenwood prospero and it's a good compromise. It comes with food processor attachments as well as a stand mixer.

SummaLuvin · 31/10/2022 10:36

I have a classic KitchenAid stand mixer, but have never had any others so can't compare to models.

I love mine, had it for 7 (?) years now and it's as good as when I first got it, looks beautiful, and works really well for what I use it for - mostly baking (cakes, bread, biscuits, meringues...). I have the pasta roller & cutter attachment which I think is fantastic. I have limited kitchen space so can't get more, but I have been intrigued by the cream maker, shaved ice, meat grinder, and vegetable slicer & shredder. From my research second-hand KitchenAid attachments seem to hold their value well, which is a pretty big bonus and would make me more likely to try them out without being too concerned if I ended up not getting on with them.

VeganGordie · 31/10/2022 13:32

I think that kitchen aids deffo look nicer i love the different colours, but the kenwoods are just as good and better in price so just depends what you want

paintitallover · 01/11/2022 07:35

I have a kmix but if I were buying again I'd switch to KitchenAid. I've had one replacement and the replacement is quite tricky to lift, with a sticky part.

PersonaNonGarter · 01/11/2022 07:45

I have a magimix and a kitchenaid. They both get used a lot and I would replace either if they broke.

I think you need to be realistic about the type of cooking you do. If you don’t make cakes then the kitchenaid isn’t going to be much use after the i rial excitement.

I have a K Mix (the retro looking one, not a Kenwood Chef). When I bought, I did a lot of research and settled on the K Mix over the KitchenAid because 1) k mix has a splatter guard which is really useful when making eg butter cream because the icing sugar doesn’t go everywhere (I hate icing sugar 😠) and 2) cheaper and I couldn’t justify the extra cost based on marketing alone.

I have been really pleased with it and it’s got a really good beater that properly gets to the bottom of the bowl.

PerditaNitt · 02/11/2022 02:10

I have a £50 aldi mixer and my mother in law has a lovely k mix. The K mix looks beautiful, is heavier and has a brilliant motor. I only use my cheap, but beautiful, one once in a while so it it is perfect for me. If you go with the K mix, the glass bowl looks better BUT it weighs a ton, so the steel is far more practical.

I would strongly recommend a magimix micro - i have the magimix 5 litre and a micro. I’ve never liked the big magimix for doughs, grating, etc and found it a faff to use and clean. The micro is incredible for chopping, it is very light, has a good motor, doesn’t have to stay out on the counter, etc

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/11/2022 02:40

The KitchenAid looks beautiful but I opted for a Kenwood Chef after advice from two chef friends. I love it. I don't have many attachments but I do have the blender and the dicer which are brilliant.

I also have a Magimix, the largest one. It's a very different machine and is brilliant for certain things but not for others.

Dammitthisisshit · 17/12/2022 09:20

@StillNotWarm did you buy a mixer? Or anyone able to offer advice! I’d like:

a mixer for baking. That’s it.

I have a liquidiser I’m happy with. I have my trusty Panasonic bread maker.

I seem to be the only person who hated their kitchen aid and am secretly quite pleased that a friend blew it up this week (to be fair on the kitchen aid trying to whisk a solid gingerbread mix will do that - I’m not blaming the mixer).

but I want something that whisks egg whites down to the bottom of a bowl, and my kitchen aid never got to the bottom. Then I’d often have to transfer eggs to another bowl, wash the bowl, transfer things again. Way too much of a faff.

so i want something that whisks to the bottom of a bowl and can be used by more than 1 bowl. Maybe I just want old style set of electric hand held whisks, something that’s like these? But I’m expecting to pay more? And the stand bit is useful but only if it works.

thankyou
