Have some family coming over we haven't seen in a year or so. Also due a baby in a few weeks. One of the family members is a trainee chef.

Want to make something lovely but that isn't going to require standing in the kitchen for hours.

What would you make?

Pulled pork?
I used the bbc good food recipe, very good.

Probably something like coq au vin or something similar with crusty bread or mashed potato. Can be made in the morning.

some kind of soup. my current favourite is Tomato with orzo pasta in, servied with crusty bread. Or maybe Butternut and Ginger (mary Berry has a good recipe).

Deli meats, cheeses, fresh bread, pate, olives, salad. Easy and delicious, they’re coming to see you, not for the food.

Oh they absolutely won't care what we eat, it's coming from me really. I feel a bit useless and like I haven't been doing the best I can as a partner and a parent as I've been struggling in the last few weeks of my pregnancy, and I take joy in taking care of people. I'd like to make myself feel good by making something tasty and nourishing for people I love, and feel a bit less like a swollen blob who naps every day and cries at tv ads.

Erm...they should be making lunch for you!

My go-to for lunch for guests is to make a couple of different quiches, some homemade coleslaw and a normal salad and either new potatoes or chips. Homemade quiches/coleslaw shows I've made an effort but actually it's fairly low effort and not stressful for me. Quiche doesn't have to be eaten hot so no worrying about timings if friends turn up late.

Otherwise I'd probably buy a load of deli stuff, nice bread, meats, cheeses, olives and make a couple of different salads. Then put my cooking effort into make a nice pudding (cake, brownies, meringues or something similar).

Are you thinking proper cooked meal served to be eaten at a table, or more of a buffet affair?
