DH is american and it is his birthday on Thursday. He has announced that he would like an ice-cream cake. What is one? Would I get away with decorating an arctic roll? Does anyone have a recipe? Help please!

I googled ice cream cake and loads came up if you want to have a look.

I have a recipe on here for Raspberry meringue bomb and it is devine.

RBH · 27/01/2008 11:09

Will check out your recipe as it sounds lovely! Unfortunately he is a fussy bugger and is currently off raspberries. I saw loads of recipes but need to find out what he is actually talking about in order to know which one to use. He is being hopelessly vague. May have to bump for Califrau later and get her to check out the Baskin Robbins one.

Tell him to google it then!

RBH · 27/01/2008 11:25

I did and instead he has looked for places around here that make them despite me saying that he was unlikely to find anything. I have looked at recipes and to be honest arctic roll is looking more and more likely!

here's an easy one
buy some ready made meringues and smash them up
whip a lot of cream solid
mix them up with a lot of icing sugar and whatever flavour you want
line cake tin with clingfilm
put mixture in tin
put in freezer overnight
take out about 10-15 mins before cutting

judge the quantities yourself depending on how big you want your cake to be .. it's that simple

Thank you! Can I cheat and just mix the meringue with softened ice cream and refreeze? What have I let myself in for!?

I do a no muss no fuss recipe for Ice Cream cake.

Take about 12 ice cream sandwhiches (am in US so hope they are there too)

a container of fudge topping.
some oreo cookies.
and some whipped topping.

put down 4 sanwhiches
mix together crushed oreo cookies with the fudge topping and layer on top.
Repeat this until you run out of sanwhiches.
Put the whipped topping on and around the sides.
Put cake in the Freezer for about 4 hours.

It comes out pretty good.

Will hunt out some ice cream sandwich things. You can get them over here but can't remember any names. Not so sure about whipped topping though. Between you all though you have given me enough great ideas to make a decent stab at it. Will let you know how I get on!

I am American too, and I actually used to be employed making ice cream cakes at Dairy Queen

If I was making one at home, I would line a cake tin with plastic wrap. Soften your favorite flavor of ice cream, then pack the tin only half-full and spread it out pretty smooth. Sprinkly a heavy layer of crushed biscuits over the ice cream, drizzle with chocolate sauce, then pack the tin with the rest of the ice cream. Cover with plastic and put in the freezer for at least 3 hours until frozen hard. Then put a plate over the tin and flip the whole thing over. The tin will pop off and you can gently peel the plastic away. Viola! Decorate as you wish.

Also, the trick to lining with plastic wrap is to lightly grease the tin first, the plastic will stick to it but won't get on your cake. Sounds weird, but works a dream.

I think if your dh is American, this is what he's imagining when he asked you for it We get them this way at ice cream shops and one fast food place called Dairy Queen.

RBH · 27/01/2008 15:16

So I am right in thinking that an ice cream cake is basically a slice of ice-cream with biscuits either on the bottom or in the middle? Can't believe I lived in the US for over 5 years and never had one! Although I believe there was one at my 30th only I was too wasted to try it

yuk at " whipped topping"
barf

BananaPudding · 27/01/2008 15:18

Yes, that's pretty much all there is to it

You can make it more interesting with the variety of biscuits, and it's also nice to use two complimentary flavors of ice cream for the two layers instead of the same one.

BananaPudding · 27/01/2008 15:20

lol Cod, we have lots of scary food over here!

RBH · 27/01/2008 15:24

I always though the weird melted plastic cheese stuff that the corner shops sold and squirted on your open packets of tortilla chips was one of the strangest. And yes, DH loves it!

OP posts:
BananaPudding · 27/01/2008 15:26

So ashamed I like that plastic cheese too.

RBH · 27/01/2008 15:28

Well we have marmite so can't really comment I suppose!

OP posts:
BananaPudding · 27/01/2008 16:50

I think marmite may have some nutitional value though, whereas whipped topping and plastic cheese are really just flavored gunk!

Fruit shoots! Hahahaha those are nasty and we don't have them Of course there are all manner of icky drinks anyway...

RBH · 27/01/2008 17:25

Kool Aid for a start. Although in my misspent youth I did find that black cherry flavour was a great mixer for very cheap bourbon.

hi rbh went away for a bit
i guess you could, never thought of that, but to be honest whipping cream ain't that hard and it makes it nicer.. i suppose you wouldn't need the icing sugar in that case
have fun experimenting and report the results pls!
