Tried & tested homemade sorbet or dairy free ice cream

I'd like to make an ice cream or sorbet to go with a dessert. One of the guests is dairy free. This is someone I 'feed' fairly regularly and if the dessert calls for ice cream, I usually make for everyone else, and serve her a shop bought dairy-free ice cream. This time I want to make a dairy free ice cream (ideally) or sorbet which I will serve to everyone.
I've seen recipes using coconut milk but don't know how they will taste. I've also wondered about using a plant based cream like Oatley?
Anyone got pointers to tried, tested and successful recipes please? Thanks

Do you have an ice cream maker and if so, is it a compressor one or one you put in the freezer? Also what flavours do they like? If I don't get back to the thread with a specific recipe, the website Chocolate Covered Katie is a great resource for dairy free recipes.

Thank you all.

I have a small ice cream maker, the 'bowl in the freezer'sort.

Any flavour but probably not chocolate as I will probably make some sort of cake covered in some sort of fruit dish. TBC!!

My daughter is lactose intolerant and also a massive ice cream junkie.

The best tasting thing we've found is over ripe bananas cut up and frozen.
Then blend the bannana, a big dollop of peanut butter, some cocoa and a bit of oat milk in a food processor. Other nut butters would work. Can have a squeeze of honey if the bannanas aren't over ripe enough to be really sweet. Substitute the cocoa for vanilla essence if you don't want a chocolatey dessert.

It really is amazing and we choose it over proper ice cream these days.

My fave is blackcurrant sorbet. Cook a load of blackcurrants with a small amount of water (or frozen berries). Squish through a sieve to remove seeds. Return to pan and add sugar to taste. Heat until sugar granules dissolve. Cool and then spin in the ice cream maker until it fluffs up. It kind of goes creamy when churned so you do not need any added milk or anything.

I do lots of variations on @Lottieskeeper recipe above with frozen sliced bananas. I might add to them a few tablespoons of cocoa powder and a pinch of salt for chocolate ice cream. I blend in my high speed blender. Usually I use probably 3-4 sliced bananas for big servings for 3 or smaller bowls for 4. Rough ideas of quantities because you can’t really go wrong. I might also add frozen blueberries to the banana for blueberry ice cream. Another idea: a few dates, a few tablespoons of nut butter and a pinch or two of salt to the frozen bananas makes a nice salted caramel ice cream. Adding pistachios is an easy one too. It’s so easy, no ice cream machine just a blender and very creamy soft ice cream.
