Melting whole bars of chocolate in the oven

Just seen a reel on social media of someone putting alternating bars of plain, milk, and white bars of chocolate on a baking sheet til it was full. Put in oven to melt before swirling. Much simpler than melting first and pouring for eg chocolate bark which I often do for Christmas gatherings.
Has anyone tried this? If so, any idea of oven temperature / how long / can you use any chocolate. Thank you

Not done it myself, but as Mary Berry says "a chocolate bar melts in a childs pocket" so I would be tempted to have a really quite low oven and patience.

I melt chocolate in the oven for making mousses, cakes etc. and always put it on at 50 degrees. It will catch very easily on anything too hot.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/10/2022 11:10

Yes, something around body temperature would probably do it, 40 C? Wouldn't take long either I wouldn't have thought. Just keep checking it until it's ready. 10/20 mins if that??

I'd also expect that you can use any chocolate. I use the very cheap 30 p a bar chocolate from Aldi/Lidl and possibly other supermarkets for baking and it's nice enough and works perfectly fine, as illustrated by a comment made by a quite snobby and well off colleague made when I took rocky road into work on one of our cake days.

She said how nice it was and you could tell that it was good chocolate. I took great pleasure in telling her that all the ingredients came from Aldi and it was the cheapest chocolate they sold.

Great thanks all will give it a go nearer Christmas.

I thought I invented that? 😂 hell to the yes, I add in whatever bits I like and looks pretty....broken up Candy canes, broken salted pretzels, Christmas shaped sprinkles.... swirl it a bit, cool it and call it 'Christmas bark' and vary it for many any occasion 🐽

just low oven gas Mark 1 and watch it through the door

Wouldn't it be easier & cost-effective to do this in the microwave?

Only if you don't have to buy the microwave first 😂

I usually do melt chocolate in the microwave but this was a clip of something like 9 full bars on a baking tray, and stirred to make twirls as the basis for chocolate bark. Ideal for big Christmas gatherings. I'd make it when the oven was cooling down from cooking something else.

Bars of chocolate don't melt evenly in the microwave so it might not be as good for what the OP describes where she wants to swirl not stir.

The uneven melting allows you to calculate the speed of light. Grin

I saw that clip too, was wondering what temperature was at.

squarepegleg · 17/10/2022 20:28

I need to google chocolate bark. Sounds great!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/10/2022 22:30

Photo is of what prompted my OP.

@squarepegleg chocolate bark is basically swirled chocolate, optional seasonal toppings eg crushed candy canes for Christmas, smashed mini eggs for Easter, and:or any other decor such as seasonal sprinkles.
Once set just break it up in a big pile. So effective Buy decent chocolate low cost from Aldi/ Lidl and it's a bargain.

Just be aware that this won't be tempered (sp?) chocolate so will melt almost instantly when touched or held and will probably be best kept in the fridge

I saw that reel too OP but for the above reasons probably won't try it!

squarepegleg · 18/10/2022 11:31

Looks lovely!

peachgreen · 18/10/2022 11:34

This is a great idea OP, I'm definitely going to do it for Christmas gifts!

Glittertwins · 18/10/2022 16:57

Aldi's Choceur range is pretty good, think I'll have to try this out

Yes it is excellent quality and the price is a bonus!

Ooh fab idea!
I do various Christmas makes, the chocs are pretty Labour intensive (nuts, Marzipans etc).
This looks like a doddle!
