Forgive me for I have sinned, I bought Anchor spreadable because it was cheaper. Now my penance is that I have to eat it 😩

The liquid left over after making butter isn’t the same as buttermilk listed in American recipes, is it? That seems to be cultured milk, more like thin yogurt?

I think you might be right actually Supercamp. Buttermilk is the liquid residue left after making butter but it is slightly fermented. So, yes, a bit like thin yoghurt. I'm not sure how easy it would be to ferment it.

The recipe I use for soda bread suggests milk with a few drops of lemon juice in if you can't get buttermilk.

I wonder how warm your houses are? Even with our heating on as usual, from October to April sh, I have to use spreadable butter, as normal butter left out in a butter dish is like rock!

I much prefer standard butter however it's just not practical. I've tried to enjoy Lurpak and other spreadables but they just taste so artificial to me. I'm trying Anchor spreadable our next shop.....

Everyone saying block butter is cheaper - I went to get some the other day and it was £2.00 for 250g whereas the Tesco British spreadable was £2.30 for 500g - making it almost half the price?!

Half the price because it's only 50% butter, combined with rapeseed oil and water.

INGREDIENTS: Butter (Milk) (50%), Rapeseed Oil (29%), Water, Salt (1%), Colour (Beta-Carotene)

Some of us only use actual real butter, which is usually in blocks, but you can sometimes get a slightly softer tubbed version, eg:

I love Anchor spreadable or Aldi's equivalent.

I don't get the love for Lurpak, I think it's tasteless. Just awful. Probably makes a nice sponge cake though?
