Hand vs Jug blender for soup

I love making soup and would like to make smooth vegetable soup now the weather's getting colder. I do have an old stick blender but it was only a cheap one I bought about 20 years ago and it takes forever to blend even a small mug of soup. I'm thnking of getting a more powerful blender but can't decide whether to go for the jog which would take a lot of space up, or a hand held blender which would just replace the old one. The budget is £80.00 max. Anyone any experience using wither or both. Which would be better for blending a pan of soup?

Get one!
Also far cheaper to run than the hob for 20/30minutes.
Mine is Russell Hobbs -few years old now.
Does smooth/ chunky / blend so you can also use as a blender for fruit etc

Get one with a saute setting as well.
I have the morphy richards saute and soup maker and also blends fruit

I use a Brain stick blender, just used it to blend a Tikka Marsala sauce actually (we’re in the US so late afternoon here). I used to have a jug blender and found it a pain to wash all the bits and put it back together again.

My mum is unexpectedly enamoured with s soup maker that my granny gave her which she didn't ask for.

All the points about the convenience of a stick blender are true if you don't want a soup maker, but I find a stick blender gives a slightly grainy texture and struggles to break up longer fibres (like in broccoli stalk) so you don't get a silky smooth result like you do with my jug blender. Mine is an attachment for my Kenwood chef and definitely doesn't spurt hot soup out the top of it (as long as I obey the "max" line which is lower down than you would expect due to the fact the blending action creates a vortex).

I used to have a fancy jug style soup maker and it was always a messy faff. I now have a cheap stick blender, about £10 from Sainsburys a couple of years ago and I love it. I make soup far more often now as it's so easy to use and wash afterwards.
