Can anyone please help me ? Ds was found to be sensitive to refined sugar, artificial colouring and certain preservatives a couple of weeks ago. I have bought several chewy type bars from health food shops and also one bar of diabetic choc (very expensive!). Does anyone have any recipes for cakes or biscuits that avoid these things? Also are there any websites that sell sweet like treats that are sugar free? Would like to be able to make him some treats - especially with xmas coming.

What about this place ? It is like an old fashioned sweet shop, but has a section for sugar free versions. It even has sugar free versions of things like Cola bottles.

Thanks Hulababy. Have just emailed them to check about colours and preservatives.

By refined sugar, you mean white sugar? Or glucose? Or sucrose?

If it's glucose/sucrose, you can buy fructose and use it as you'd use white sugar in baking. Most big grocery stores stock it, as "Fruit sugar" or "Fruisana". It's still refined sugar, but the glycemic index is much much lower, and it seems to reduce the blood sugar peak/trough effect. We use this all the time, as I'm twitchy about blood sugar levels (not diabetic, but I will be when older).

If it's refined sugar of any sort, here's a link to an excellent recipe that uses no refined sugar. It makes an American-style loaf cake, which has been a big hit with lots of Brits I know. It does have beer in it (!): Banana Nut Bread .

Thanks NotQuiteCockney - that sounds ideal (ds would like the idea of beer being in it. Will have to check about the refined thing. Doctor said that natural sugars were ok so I assume that fructose would be alright - will check first though.

how about jamie oliver's thing where you cook and then mash up dried fruits, spread them flat on greaseproof paper, and then cut into nice shapes for kids?

you can either do individual flavours or blends

my ds likes apricot and mango.. what a gourmet adventurer he is!
