Wouldn't chicken do?

(Bears in mind Knorr's "Pea and Ham? From a chicken? ad, which will live in my memory when my name escapes me)

Or buy a ham knuckle or two from your butcher, keep them in the freezer - you can literally just boil it up with some veggie, strain, skim, add your lentils and blitz - yum.

Or a smoked ham shank, for a smokey baconish lentil soup.

In answer to the actual question though (sorry, I ramble ) no, we don't have them here either

Aren't you worried about how a ham stock cube is made though?

Same for a chicken stock one.

Always best to make your own and keep it in the freezer.

Instead of ham stock cube, I use bacon trimmings from this farm:
www.ballencrieffrppigs.co.uk/index.php

The trimmings are about 80p/package and made an incredibly tasty soup base.

Your butcher may be able to tell you where to get bacon trimmings, which are extremely cheap and far more flavourful than any stock cube.

Marigold bullion powders are also a good alternative - easily available in large tubs from Holland & Barrett.

sophy · 24/01/2008 19:40

yes I buy marigold veg bouillon powder for when we run out of frozen.

expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 19:42

do you have a butcher? really, it's worth going in and asking if he/she sells bacon trimmings becuase they're cheap and far tastier than any ham stock cube for your soups.

why would one worry about how a stock cube is made .. do they take battery-farmed stocks and shove them in a machine that sucks out all the juices and then pushes and crushes the dehydrated remains of the poor little stocks until they are small and cuboid?
