Porridge oats cooked well with finely grated apple over the top. Sometimes a bit of cream.

Sweet potato mashed with butter

Potatoes, chicken and carrots very finely mashed with a little water to thin it out

Boiled egg mashed very well with insalted butter or milk to thin it out

Plain full fat yoghurt with mashed banana or grated pear over the top

I have not started finger foods yes as my 7 month old hasn't grasped the hand/mouth thing yet but I'm going to start soon to help encourage it

Are you spoon feeding or trying to do finger food?

My DD was a little underweight when we started weaning, so I'd always try and make a carbs+vegs+protein puree/mash of sorts (with an extra TSP of olive oil) and offer finger food on the side for some practice. I prepared and froze a lot of the vegs and proteins in ice cube trays, then mixed and matched based on whatever flavour combinations I thought could work, which meant I could put together a meal very quickly and get her to try a variety of flavours. She wasn't picky, which helped!

Best combinations off the top of my head:

  • rice or sweet potato, butternut squash, ricotta
  • polenta, beef, carrots
  • cous cous, mixed vegetables, lentils
  • rice, courgettes/peas/asparagus, salmon

Finger food was generally steamed vegetables (large variety), soft cooked pasta or soft fruit.

I didn't do snacks other than the odd rice cake until she was 1, and then it was fruit or yoghurt.

Breakfast was either Weetabix and banana, porridge and grated pear/apple, or yoghurt+banana+peanut butter with toast fingers

If you're after more defined recipes, I've been recommended the book "what mummy makes" by several people. I haven't actually tried it, but it seems to be very popular

I've been using the what mummy makes book and it's fab!
