Food Budget

I am single and have to order online as I am a shielder trying to avoid coivd. So I have been ordering every week but it has gotten really expensive, with delivery charges etc, so thinking of reducing to every two weeks.
Just wondering what everyone is spending just now. As £40 is a lot (minimum amount I allowed to spend) for one week, i mean I do put soap and other non food items in there. But I really need to get my budget down.

Include non food items to bring the cost up to the amount you need to spend for free delivery.

I do a massive delivery/collect order once a month or so, put all my dried, tinned, frozen, toiletries, meat to freeze, cleaning products etc on, anything with a long shelf life. Then get a fortnightly fruit and veg box delivered by a local green grocer (they're £20, enough for 4 people for 2 weeks, though some batch cooking/prep needs to be done so it doesn't go off towards the end of week 2).
Things like pasta and passata, rice, dried beans etc that's cheap I buy extra of for skint times.

Unhelpful and cruel. I'll be reporting.

Tell us what you would normally order then maybe we can come up with cheaper alternatives/ a different way of doing things? What supermarket do you use?
Appreciate being on your own means you will spend less than a family- my mum is in your shoes and can struggle to get to the £40 but if you buy non perishables/cleaning stuff etc spread over the weeks it will get you there - like you say maybe cut down and have 2/3 x a month deliveries and not every week? If you have a freezer with room in it this is doable- freeze bread/milk - have frozen veg etc.

Don't know if this is helpful but Morrisons do a doorstep delivery service with no minimum order and £2.50 delivery - i think it's still running.
www.morrisons.com/help/coronavirus/online/#what-is-the-doorstep-delivery-service

A few Co-ops near me charge £2 for online delivery with a £15 minimum order.

NewBootsAndRanty · 05/09/2022 23:56

Another good idea I've seen on here is to order every 8 days not every 7.

MarmiteCoriander · 06/09/2022 00:01

Do you have a car? Aldi do click and collect orders and they can put them in your boot- no contact with people.

If £40 is the minimum spend, then yes, I'd do a 2 weekly shop instead. Meal plan, have long life milk as a back up, have frozen veg as a back up if fresh doesn't last.

I don’t think anyone was cruel. Simply curious.

My experience of supermarkets both pre and post covid is everyone respects personal space. I would think it would be a very unlikely place to catch anything; particularly off peak in a mask.

However, it’s your choice to make and Morrisons minimum online spend is £25 😀

I don't think that was at all rude.

I order from Tesco for my Mum and she has a delivery every other week, which works very well.

OldTinHat · 06/09/2022 07:51

I live alone and order every other week.
