Has anyone grown up having coffee soup?

Well, I'm on the downside of the proverbial hill. ( I guess that is what makes me seem to speed up) Anyway I was floating through the corridors of my mind and reminiscing about having what we called coffee soup before heading off to school, It was simply a slice of bread with coffee with milk poured over and then a bit of sugar on top, We usually had about two to four slices and good and hot coffee, I must confess that it is a practice that I still do on occasion today. The reason I ask is that most folks seem to cringe when they see me eat it. As a Marine eating it in a mess hall it was embarrassing to see my fellow warriors balk at something so simple and delicious.

Not coffee soup as such, mum gave me breads with hot milk poured over with a sprinkling of sugar on top. I loved it. The bread was the day old home made bread.

I once mistook coffee granules for gravy granules when making a stew…no one noticed.

yes, I do believe a ham gravy is made with coffee too.

Not coffee soup but from Asian cuisine ( my mothers side) I regularly have sticky white rice, with hot coffee poured on top with a sprinkle of sugar. Not everyone's cup of tea (defo not my DH) but I love it and it's like comfort food.

So you pour the coffee onto the bread? Am I understanding this correctly? Or do you have the coffee along side of the bread and milk?

blisstwins · 28/08/2022 20:17

I have Italian ancestry and that is something my mom did.

Hillsidehigh · 28/08/2022 20:17

My french house mate at uni used to have this for breakfast

BuddhaAtSea · 28/08/2022 20:21

I don’t really understand why not just sip the coffee and bite out of the bread, rather than eating it with a spoon?
It’s the same with crisp sandwiches, I don’t get it.

I would rib you for it if I saw you doing that. Neither here nor there, whatever floats your boat. And if for you is comfort food, go for it! 😊🤗

We would have a big milky coffee made with espresso, and have chunks of stale bread to dip in for breakfast! I used to love it when I was little. Though weird to think about now as I’d never let DC have coffee, especially not espresso!

dudsville · 28/08/2022 20:23

Interesting! Do you eat it with a soup spoon? What ratio bread to coffee? And do you have a pic?

oviraptor21 · 28/08/2022 20:25

Sounds a bit like poor man's tiramisu!

I remember having condensed milk sandwiches as a child. Also camp coffee with two spoons of condensed milk.

When we were poorly we had pobs - warm milk with chunks of bread and sugared generously.

Also, thinly sliced apple sandwiches (with sugar), banana sandwiches (with sugar) and mars bar (thinly sliced) sandwiches.

Recently I made ice cream from condensed milk and double cream. Might make my own condensed milk next time.

Are we sisters? I had all of those, still do apart from the milk pobs. I loved it as child but wouldn’t have it now.
I sometimes dip my toast in my coffee though.

The recipe is simple Just put a slice of bread in a bowl sprinkle a little sugar on and do a few more layers but do not put sugar on the top slice yet, first pour a cup of hot coffee with milk over to saturate. Now you can sprinkle a bit more sugar on the top slice. And Waa-la

Voila, OP, not Waa-la

It used to be regular fare for breakfast in many parts of Spain, I wasn't allowed coffee as a child so used to have it minus the coffee, called "sopas de leche" my husband used to have it just like you with milky coffee, so did my parents
To me "sopas de leche" also " sopas migadas" is comfort food and occasionally in winter I'll have it.
With the milky coffee some call it "café con sopas"
Difference with yours is that bread is just pulled into bits rather than slices
