Breakfast before school...

my 4 yrd old ds has just started reception andI'm having trouble getting him to eat breakfast in the morning before we go. he'd have a bowl of fruit no probs (blueberries, raspberries, grapes, apple whatever) but won't touch toast or cereal (unless it's coco pops!) until he's been up 2 hours and we just don't have time. Is fruit enough or does he need something more filling? he'll usualy have a glass of milk or yoghurt drink as well .

normally he's a pretty good eater - loves all fruit, veg, normal stuff as well as biscuits, sweets etc in moderation (not for breakfast - tho' he would if I'd let him!) I'm trying not to turn it into an argment eaxh day - it;s hard enough getting him and his bog bro' up, dressed and out the door in time.

Do you think he'll jst get better as he realises he's hungry by lunchtime. ?

what time does he have lunch? we didn't usually ear until about 1/1.30pm and when ds started school he was eating lunch there at 12noon - so it might be that your ds will be ok until then, he should also be having a fruit snack at mid-morning break.
Maybe you could have a word with the teacher and send in something with carbs in it for a mid-morning snack if you feel he needs it.

thanks CS - i think they eat around 12/12.30 and he gets up around 7/7.30 with fruit around 7.45. he is eating all his packed lunch so I guess he's fairly hngry by then - which is not a bad thing.

You're right, I think they do get fruit at mid morning so that'll keep him topped up.

I've just read the Nuttella thread !

He'd probably eat nutella on wholemeal toast - although not a perfect breakfast food, I'd be happy with that as an alternative to fruit and better then cocopops!

Have you tried a smoothie. Whatever fruit you liks, plus a banana, a small handful of porridge oats some youghurt and some milk, then blitz. Keeps me going for hours.

I think studies have shown repeatedly that a protein based breakfast is best for children. So might he eat bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, cheese etc along with his fruit?

My mum used to battle to get me to eat breakfast in the morning, 1/2 hour to eat half a slice of toast.
Now I don't eat breakfast on work days, I just can't face it. When I am not at work I eat something about an hour after I get up, any earlier and I feel sick for about half an hour after.
tbh if he will eat fruit and drink some milk / have a yoghurt that sounds fine to me. Maybe put a bit more something in his packed lunch in case he is still hungry then.

COV - smoothie a great idea!

Lauriefairycake · 21/01/2008 23:51

small squares of plain cheese would be good or that fabby smoothie from COV

I don't fancy breakfast myself til I've been up a couple of hours

Can you give him fruit and a drink of milk (which isn't such a bad breakfast) then give him a flapjack or similar on way to school?

wohmum · 22/01/2008 00:06

Thanks all,

I do remember reading something about protein being good - will try the cheese (mmmmmmm cheese and grapes!) and can't believe I didn't think of smoothies!

have also remembered that he used to love greek yoghurt and honey - we've not had that for ages! How come they go off their favouite foods and won't touch them?
