No kitchen- what do I feed my 6month old?

Hi,
currently in the middle of a house renovation- and have no kitchen- only appliances we have- fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, microwave and a halogen oven (just a basic one).
need some ideas on what foods to make for my 6month old- (BLW).

baby is sick of toast and porridge everyday!
any suggestions please, thanks

Roasted in the halogen oven:
red pepper (peeled)
butternut squash fingers
tofu sticks with a little tomato purée/garlic/herb marinade

steamed in the microwave:
apple slices
carrot sticks
sweet potato wedges
courgette

eggs hard boiled in the kettle and quartered, or microwave scrambled egg

cous cous made with the kettle and stuck together with hummus or mashed avocado

cold:
yoghurt with fruit & nut butter
grated cheese
cucumber sticks

I sympathise it’s hard enough to think what to give them even with a full range of cooking facilities!

@BeastOfBODMAS thank you so much, that’s so helpful! really appreciate it x

Lol definitely agree- I have 3 elder children and it’s a nightmare- as 2 have allergies!

Ikea sell a portable plug in induction hob (1 ring) for £45 - would that help? It might make it easier to do mash, rice, pasta etc.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 27/08/2022 15:24

‘Picky lunch’ - breadsticks/veg sticks/avocado/salmon/cheese etc….If you think breadsticks might be a bit too hard right now, finger-sized strips of pitta bread are usually quite easy for a baby to eat.
Weetabix or shredded wheat for breakfast instead of porridge.
Scrambled eggs
Risotto
Pasta mixed with a bit of tinned tuna (get the kind in spring water, not brine)

The Baby at the table book does delicious no cook purées - things like cannellini beans and tuna. Ds loved them.

Avocado and scrambled Egg
houmous sandwich
those ready chopped steam bags of veg from chilled section. Peas, broccoli, butternut squash etc. just pierce and microwave
microwave rice
microwave mash
fruit
yogurt
grated cheese

whyareallthegoodonesgone · 27/08/2022 15:50

Wow thank you so many ideas! Thank you so much!
@Caspianberg definitely going to do the chilled veg bags!
@Juicesausagecake thank you- we are doing BLW
@Fivemoreminutes1 great few more ideas to add
@Rina66 not looking to buy any more appliances (can’t afford it either- sad but true!) just to utilise what we already have in the best way

Banana-cado?

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/08/2022 15:59

If you're doing BLW you could put it in toast or add pitta fingers Wink

whyareallthegoodonesgone · 27/08/2022 16:25

@PritiPatelsMaker yes already using butter, avocado, banana on toast- just wanted more ideas and variety- have some to get me started

Just thinking, another thing we do (not sure how it’d work with your allergies) is mix pumpkin seed butter with natural yoghurt for a very quick dip for veggies.
The meridian one from H&B is zero salt and I quite like it on toast too

whyareallthegoodonesgone · 27/08/2022 17:07

@BeastOfBODMAS that sounds quite yum- Baby thankfully hasn’t shown any signs of allergies 🙏! So will definitely try this x

You can steam veg and fish in the microwave, or cook scrambled egg
Toast with various toppings (peanut butter, houmous, mashed avocado)

whyareallthegoodonesgone · 27/08/2022 17:13

@CakeCrumbs44 Tbh I have only ever used a microwave to warm up food and to make baked potatoes sometimes- other than that I’ve never ‘cooked’ with the microwave- is that weird? Obviously will be using it now for sure! Have no choice

CakeCrumbs44 · 27/08/2022 17:18

I don't usually cook with the microwave either but I did when my kids were weaning as it seemed silly to boil the kettle and use gas for 10 minutes to cook two broccoli florets or 5 green beans. They cook much quicker in the microwave. I think you can actually buy specific microwave steamers to make it easier.

whyareallthegoodonesgone · 27/08/2022 17:23

@CakeCrumbs44 lol I agree- especially with the current utilities rates!

You can do potato waffles in the toaster!

Fleur405 · 27/08/2022 17:30

Things that don’t need cooked - like sliced nectarines/avocado/banana/cucumber (take skin off one half so they can hold the bit with the skin and gum the other but.

Things that need cooked like apple/pear/courgette/sweet potato etc could either be sliced into batons and sort of steamed in microwave or roasted in the oven.

inappropriateraspberry · 27/08/2022 18:13

I'd just get some jars/pouches of baby food to vary it! I wouldn't want to be struggling to make stuff in a makeshift kitchen for them to then not eat it!

Ducksurprise · 27/08/2022 18:21

Roast dinner.
pre cooked sliced beef/chicken, microwavable veg bags and microwave mash potatoes (I just cook in skin and then remove the flesh, also works for sweet potato) gravy granules and aunt Bessie's cooked Yorkshire pudding which taste fine when just defrosted. I used to

MolliciousIntent · 27/08/2022 18:23

Tbh if baby is only 6m and this is temporary, I'd sack off weaning for a few days and just give milk

ChubbyCapybara · 28/08/2022 20:55

My DD used to love fresh mozzarella cheese (the kind that comes in a ball), I just removed it from its pouch and cut it into strips she could grasp. It's low in salt and a good source or protein.
Also, butter beans (I used to buy organic ones in tetrapak, ready to eat) - I got a handful, patiently removed the skin and let her pick them up.
As a breakfast variation, yoghurt mixed with some mashed banana, peanut butter and a bit of weetabix to reach a consistency good enough to stick to a spoon, so she could bring it to her mouth without dropping it everywhere.

Anyway, baby is only 6 months old, and with this being just a temporary situation I would just keep going with milk and for now provide fruit, toast and avocado or cucumber sticks to keep practicing, without worrying too much about making full on meals. Especially since with BLW it's not like they'll manage to eat a lot this early on.

PritiPatelsMaker · 28/08/2022 21:00

Scrambled eggs or omelette done in the microwave? You could cut the omelette into strips and add some halved cherry tomatoes on the side.
