Whole chicken in a ninja dual

Justmuddlingalong · 26/08/2022 14:51

I bought a ninja dual this morning.
And a chicken.
So far so good.
Now I'm stuck. I had a nose on YouTube, but I thought the collective knowledge of MNetters would be better.
It's a 1.4 kg bird. What settings, for how long and at what temperature should I be aiming for?
Don't want to poison us or regret the purchase, so please get me up and running. 🐔

The ridiculous fucking image that title conjured…😆

OK, so my initial use of a ninja was not a good one! So rather than cook a high stakes expensive chicken, my advice would be start getting a feel for it with vegetables and sausages first.

I foind it browns much quicker than it cooks through, so it might look beautiful on the outside but still be underdone, not that it burns necessarily- it just cooks differently.

I usually do it for approx 1hr on the roast setting. I start with it breast down and turn it after 30mins. I tend to check the temperature using a meat thermometer so bring it out earlier or leave it longer if necessary.

I'd be happy with chicken nuggets as an opener, but to justify the price, DP was bribed with a roast chicken dinner. I can't back down now. 😱

The little booklet that comes with it has a handy list of times/functions. I think that size chicken is 50 mins on roast function. I rub some oil into it and season, and turn it a couple of times throughout the cooking.

NighghtmareNeighbour · 26/08/2022 15:08

This is the ninja recipe site, and these are what comes up for roast chicken and air fryer. First one is for the dual machine, I imagine others will be too.

I’ve done a whole chicken twice. One that was exactly the same size as the one in the book (medium) then DH bought a large and I had to experiment.

I did the first at 160/bake/50 minutes. The second one I did the same, but with the bird upside down for this bit, then I turned it over and did a bit longer (I think 10 minutes?) at the same settings with a bit of oil sprayed on.

This was Sunday. We’re not dead yet!

(I’d recommend a meat thermometer - I got a cheap one from Amazon).

abovedecknotbelow · 26/08/2022 15:34

Does it really save any money? I'd do my chicken and potatoes in the oven at the same time, with the ninja you'd need to do them separately so overall on for longer?

Justmuddlingalong · 26/08/2022 15:55

I've no idea.
The one I've got has 2 drawers so the chicken and spuds, well, chips if I'm being honest, in theory will sync and be ready at the same time. I've prepped it and will let you all know how it goes. Meat thermometer has been ordered, but we'll just have to take our chances tonight that it's cooked ok.
Thanks for all the tips. 😋

If only OP had misspelled Dual/duel to complete the image!

Just like that!

Justmuddlingalong · 26/08/2022 17:55

Just finished dinner. I did the chicken at 180 degrees for 1 hour. Chips at 200 degrees for 25 minutes. The sync function is amazing, worked brilliantly.
Chicken was cooked perfectly, really moist and the skin lovely and golden and crispy. Chips were bloody delicious. Crispy outside and fluffy inside. The drawers are fab and easy to wash too. DP is impressed as am I. It's early days, but a big 👍 from me after my first attempt at using it. Thanks again for all the hints.

The first thing I cooked in mine was a roast chicken -it was perfect!

I do it on roast 160 for an hour, turning halfway through

lorisparkle · 26/08/2022 18:10

I joined the Facebook group for the ninja dual and there are loads of fabulous ideas. The most popular seems to be the whole roast chicken and I was impressed with mine too. We do a lot of wedges to go with things but my favourite has been the sweetcorn cobs.

Haudyourwheesht · 26/08/2022 20:44

I love my air fryer. I've only had it for about a month and I've bored everyone I know talking about how they should get one too.

runwithme · 26/08/2022 20:51

We used ours for the first time -- salmon and new potatoes. I cooked the potatoes for 20 mins but they were still hard, so need to adjust that. Any other tips or meal suggestions?

SelfMadeWoman · 27/08/2022 10:53

What size Did you get? The 300 or the 400? I'm wavering 🙂

Justmuddlingalong · 27/08/2022 10:58

I got the 300. It's usually just DP and me so it's plenty big enough for us. It's a big machine and we really don't need or have the room for the bigger one.

I've just bought the AF300, Chicken is on my list to do.
