I made jam!

There is no point to this post other than to tell someone other than my disinterested tween that I just made jam....and it worked, it looks like jam.

Spent a few (nearly glorious apart from the thorns and nettles) hours picking blackberries yesterday.

Popped to IKEA for jam jars (I know I should have saved some but it was spur of the moment) and now we have gorgeous little pots of jam. And a load of stuff I didn't know I needed from IKEA 🙄

Oh, also did a name change as I plan to give some of the jam away!

Well done.

I made apple and blackberry jam this week too. For some reason I’d always thought it was some long complicated thing beyond me.

Blackberryjammin · 24/08/2022 17:31

Yes it's much easier than I thought. The kitchen's a bit sticky now though!

Oooh lovely. Our multi cooker thingy has a jam setting. I might give it a whirl.

Lansonmaid · 24/08/2022 17:40

Love home made jam, good on you op for trying it. Some fruits set better than others though. Peach and cinnamon jam is gorgeous but needs preserving jam and a bottle of Certo pectin to get it to set.....

I love this time of year because of the blackberries. I'm not very domesticated but get all my earth mother points from blackberry jam - and marmalade in January. Always stressful but worth it.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 24/08/2022 17:58

When we go on holiday in October we make our own jam while we are there. Chef ds gets roped into making plain scones regularly!
It is quite an addictive afternoon treat!

Blackberryjammin · 24/08/2022 21:04

Ooh, scones, now that's a good idea!

I have been put off proper jam making by the time involved in the jar preparation and sealing the jars etc so have only done very small batches of jam (mainly the type you make in the oven) to keep in the fridge. Did you do all the sterilising of jars & the circles of paper on top of the jam etc? We eat quite a lot of jam so wondering if I need bother with that.

I do sterilise the jars by putting them in the oven but don't generally put the little bits of paper on top. I have had jam grow mould on occasions though so perhaps I should. I also make lemon curd but that has to be kept in the fridge. It is way superior to shop bought stuff though

Hey me too! I had some jars, but went to Hobbycraft for wax circles and a straining bag.

It was a lot easier than I thought too.

BronzeSage · 25/08/2022 23:32

@Cooroo I make marmalade using a food processor these days. I even made some this week, using partially defrosted Seville oranges, flung whole into the magimix. Then sugar and water, and a lemon. Voila! And it tastes the same.

Well done I've always wanted to make jam.

I want to learn to knit 🧶 but it may be a few years till I do

BocaChica · 26/08/2022 10:40

Does anyone else reuse glass jars with twist on/off lids for jam that have a seal on the lid ?
I've been doing this for some years
No wax disc needed :)

  • Clean jar, check lid in good order ( not damaged, bent etc ) .
  • Put in oven @80/90C for 10 minutes in advance just in case. Let them cool a bit
  • When jam ready let it cool a little ( but still needs to be borderline to hot to touch )
  • Fill jars to within about 3/4" of top,
  • Put on and turn lid on
  • Leave to cool

Lids should 'pop' down when vacuum is created due to cooling

For those that havnt done it : Jam making can be dangerous - only do it if you are on top of the situation
