Ok dug out the bread maker and plan to make bread more often.

Just wondered has anyone worked out he cost per loaf of a 1lb or 1.5lb basic loaf.

wondered that myself i make quite a bit. defo not the pound-a-loaf that it costs to buy, i'd think, even including the electric.

KatyMac · 20/01/2008 22:37

My very expensive flour is 3.30 for 3KGs

I use 900 mls so no idea how to convert that

2 sachets of yeast

1 teaspoon of salt

2 teaspoons of sugar

2 tabs of olive oil

200ml milk

I have no idea how to price any of that

Scramble · 20/01/2008 22:44

OK I wil have to work it out then won't I. I was hoping some bright spark had done it already.

Let us know when you've worked it out Scramble. I'm shocked by the price of bread these days and I'm thinking of getting a breadmaker (but only if it'll save me money for my effort).

ineedapoo · 20/01/2008 22:52

don't forget the electricity and the cost of the breadmaker

Scramble · 20/01/2008 22:53

Water FREE
Skimmed Milk 2tbsp= 30g. 383g = 99p = 4p
Butter 2tbps. ach about 5p
Sugar 1.25 tbsp = 18g
Flour 2cups = 280g. 1500kg = 1.07. = 20p

Oh feck it its less than 40p for the ingriedients isn't it grin].

DH has just worked out that a bag of flour which is 1.5 kg converts to 3lbs in weight and costs £0.87.

Fresh yeast is about 90p for 4 or 5 loaves.

60g butter is 0.22p

Altogether about 0.65p per loaf (depending on the quality of all these ingredients!)

calzone · 20/01/2008 22:53

and DH says you dont need a breadmaker!!!!!

Scramble · 20/01/2008 22:53

Bread maker was a present and electricity who cares I love the smell when it is baking that is worth it alone .

calzone · 20/01/2008 22:54

Scramble.....you dont need sugar either!!!

Twinklemegan · 20/01/2008 22:54

Well a normal loaf costs over a quid these days doesn't it, and it's pretty crap so you don't even enjoy eating it. Sounds good to me.

gigglewitch · 20/01/2008 22:55

c'mon then girlies, lets figure it out between us here then.....
bag of flour, say 1.5kg, do we compare prices or just pick a number/?? i paid £1.50 ish today

seb1 · 20/01/2008 22:55

I bought some mixes from Aldi, 75p for 2 loaves.

ineedapoo · 20/01/2008 22:55

don't you need sugar for the yeast to work must admit we love the smell especially raisin and cinamon bread and eat loads

gigglewitch · 20/01/2008 22:56

actually that was a 2kg bag

ok you have done it all while i was thinking

Scramble · 20/01/2008 22:56

I got a small pack of quick yeast at 99p rather than the sachets, only 1 tsp in a 1lb loaf so will do about 15 loafs I think.

gigglewitch · 20/01/2008 22:57

thanks seb!

seb1 · 20/01/2008 22:57

Lidl do strong white flour for 59p so I am going to try that as well.

gigglewitch · 20/01/2008 22:58

you talk my kind of shopping seb

Scramble · 20/01/2008 22:59

My fancy organic strong bread flour was only £1.07, yeast was fancy organic stuff too, sachets seemdc so expensive.

Nope I am sticking with about 40p. Thats little more than the value loafs, ok it is about half the size but it is just enough for the kids pack lunches and my lunchtime soup, perfect.

Lidl do mixes like Aldi but can't remember how much they are.

calzone · 20/01/2008 23:00

Ask at Sains bakery for fresh yeast...cheap as chips!!

Sugar can stimulate the yeast to prove the dough while the salt kills the yeast.

But, if done properly and left to prove for a bit longer, you dont need the sugar.

To use fresh yeast, you dont need to dissolve it in water, just sprinkle it over the flour, add the salt but keep it away from the yeast....salt on one side and yeast on the other.

Twinklemegan · 20/01/2008 23:00

You're better off with a smaller loaf anyway because it won't go stale before you've finished it.

seb1 · 20/01/2008 23:03

DD says I make the best bread in the world , maybe I should change my name to Jonathan Warburton

gigglewitch · 20/01/2008 23:03

stale???
my lot eat the biggest loaf the breadmaker will hold, 2kg - within the day.
