Yes. Do you think they kill them in a nice way?

Peachy · 20/01/2008 22:25

We're dairy free for medical reasons- ds1, ds3 and I get stomach isues from scasein that can be quite severe; ds2 and dh are fortuantely able to eat and drini what they wish

spicemonster · 20/01/2008 22:27

I'm sure it's quick and they avoid distressing them or their mothers (this is why I always buy organic as apart from the issues with drugs etc, I'm convinced they treat their livestock better but I've not got any evidence for that).

Peta factsheet on milk for those who are interested. (I am veggie but not vegan btw, I don't drink milk though 'cause it makes me retch!)

princessmel · 21/01/2008 09:55

I do buy organic milk. Maybe this is better for them like you say.

The calves are usually shot through the head. Often when newborn and still wobbly. Nasty business.
Cows are made to produce far more milk than they would naturally, which in addition to being very stressful to their bodies, stretches their poor udders so much that they can reach the ground, get stepped on and tear.

Expat, can I please come and eat with you one day?

Lots of vegan recipes here

expatinscotland · 21/01/2008 23:14

Ooo, great site, Ticky! I've added to my favs.

Vegans welcome at ours for a meal.

I don't know how readily available it is here, but it's easy to pick up vegan wine in Boulder.

TooTicky · 21/01/2008 23:17

Okay, should we ever manage to get north of the border, I'll give you a call
I'm a cider girl though.

expatinscotland · 21/01/2008 23:22

Mmm, cider.

Loads of room up here if you make it up!

We'd go vegan the whole time as a wee experience.

i'm loving this site, especially the ideas for puddings and cakes, which have always been tricky for me as a non-vegan.

madamez · 21/01/2008 23:39

Hay? Or how about pot noodles, which contain nothing that actually counts as a foodstuff but are tasty
