What food should I avoid in an attempt to get rid of thrush?

I've had thrush since Christmas Eve & despite 2 lots of Canestan, can't shift it.I'm going to go to the Drs tomorrow,if I can get in,but wondered if there were any foods known to aggravate it? I was advised against food with yeast on it in a previous thread, which is going to be a big PITA for me,because I eat bread at least twice a day.

Is there anything else I should try cutting out or down on?I'm a bit flummoxed because I've never had to avoid any type of food before. Are there any types of bread that don't use yeast? I could cry at the thought of never eating toast again. Are mushrooms bad too?

Thankyou.

Is it definitely thrush?

"Avoid simple carbohydrate - especially any forms of sugar or refined flour
Reduce total carbohydrate dietary intake
Emphasize lean meats and vegetables
Strict avoidance of yeast containing foods or yeast derived foods such as cheese, vinegar, dried foods, alcohol, mushrooms, bread products.
Avoid fruit juices or very sweet fruits "

From googling, can't remember site though!

Thankyou,I'm not sure what to do as I have a very physical job,so tend to eat a lot of carbs, especially bread & eat cheese almost every day,to give me enough energy to do the work I do.I'm already 'underweight' so don't want to loose any more by droppng carbohydrates.

Have seen the Dr today, who said that the over the counter pessaries weren't much good in her experience & gave me a prescription for a 3 day course of treatment. She said to ring her if it doesn't work & she'll prescribe something stronger.I'llcross my fingers & legs that this works.

You can take diflucan tablets.

However none of these things work against my thrush when I get it (very rarely and only ever anti-biotic based)BUT, in when I was younger, I was plagued by it.

Homeopathy shifts it every time, and no giving up nice grub, as it protects you against further attacks

Cantharis and Candida work best from qualified homeopath NOT Boots

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2008 21:05

grapefruit seed extract fabulous for this.

make absolutely sure you are wet enough before penetrative sex (sorry for tmi) and make sure your dp is treated.

mushrooms are bad. anything with sugar bad. unrefined carbs bad.

get some probiotics.

homeopathy works too.

Heathcliffscathy · 21/01/2008 21:05

if your dp is not treated, he'll be reinfecting you and vice versa.

I did the whole diet thing and honestly I wish I had never started

don't do it unless you are at the end of your tether - to do the whole anti-candida diet you can't eat fruit, yeast, citric acid... oh it is endless. Sugar and yeast basically - but my female gp told me that it was no use, since the body turned any food into sugar anyway - and she's quite a good doctor in terms of being open to alternative suggestions

my doc gave me diflucan for 6 months, and eventually a GP gave me some Timodene cream and I tend to need to use it every 3 or 4 weeks, for a couple of days, and it goes away

actually I have been very low physically, and think it was a sign in my case of a low immune system, rather than too much yeast

fizzbuzz · 21/01/2008 21:16

Are you sure it is thrush Cappaccunio? Too much thrush can cause nerve damage which feels like thrush but isn't. Timodene is often precribed for this, and can fluctuate during a cycle just like thrush, usually getting worse just before a period.

Believe me I know EVERYTHING about this. Have been to hell and back.......

Blossomhill · 21/01/2008 21:18

the best thing i ever did (and still do) is have an activia yoghurt everyday. i suffered with thrush off and on for 8 years so know how awful it is
touch wood for 2 years having the yoghurts haven't had!

Cappuccino · 21/01/2008 21:18

I had it tested to make sure it wasn't something else

Timodene does seem to work

worley · 21/01/2008 21:21

are you also using bubblebaths too juch etc. i discovered i cant use anything more than the gentle lush bathbomb or ds's baby baths. anything stronger and it seems to start off thrush. it may just be coincidence...

Cappuccino · 21/01/2008 21:21

and I wouldn't say I had 'too much' - it just got very irritating on and off for a year, but I am a bit of a drama queen

for me it tends to be more external than internal iyswim - I do wonder, after reading the timodene leaflet which says that candida can grow when skin rubs together, if it is just something physically that has changed down there since dd2's birth (dd1 was elective cs) because my labia seem, well, just a bit less pert (TMI sorry)

FuriousGeorge · 23/01/2008 10:57

Wow,theres some great info here,so thanks.I am relieved to hear about what your Dr said about changing your diet,Cappucino, that is a very good point.TBH I think I'm run down,as have had cold sores & mouth ulcers fairly recently too. It's not that easy to 'do less' though is it?

The thrush seems to have improved the past couple of days,so I haven't tried the stuff the Dr prescribed yet.I'm also going to print this thread off so I can sort out some homeopathic remedies for the next time it rears its ugly head.

Thankyou everyone who contributed,I shall try what you suggest.
