What is Weichkaese?
Is this a speciality (German?) cheese?
The reason why I ask is that I'm confused... Weichkaese is also the German generic term for 'soft cheese' in general. I live in Germany, am 13 weeks pg and dh and I buy a feta imitation from our local supermarket, called 'Deutscher Weichkaese' (presumably meaning 'German soft cheese', because they're not allowed to call it feta), and eat quite a lot of it, as we consider feta safe during pregnancy. Now I've found a (British) list on the Internet which lists feta as safe but something called 'Weichkaese' as not! It's counted in the category of mould-ripened soft cheeses - the feta substitute we buy certainly isn't mould-ripened - but I'm pretty scared now as I've eaten loads of the stuff (albeit always heated up). So I'm desperately hoping 'Weichkaese' is a German gourmet brie-style speciality! I've never liked cheeses with mould rinds myself so this isn't something I've been 'confronted' with before. (My German gynaecologist thinks the listeria advice is over-panicky but I suppose you only need to catch one dodgy one...) Can anyone enlighten me?

Don't worry if you are heating the cheese up it will kill any Listeria that may be present.

The current guideline is for women not to eat any soft cheese pasteurised or unpasteurised as even with pasteurised there is a very small risk the cheese may be contaminted with Listeria. Feta is safe as it is very acidic and salty and Listeria cannot live in it.

I'm a food microbiologist btw if it were me I would keep eating it.
