Was planning to make marmalade this weekend - will any old oranges do?

I think any oranges must be ok, because i have never seen seville oranges either. i think they are only used for making marmalade, so no supermarket would stock them surely?

nannyL · 19/01/2008 17:50

i saw them in waitorse just last week if it helps?

My mum buys tins of chopped Seville oranges from somewhere to make her marmalade and its very good-I think she adds a few fresh Navel oranges too.

Bluestocking · 19/01/2008 17:53

My nearest Waitrose has them too. The ready chopped oranges in a tin are called Ma-made or something similar. My mum used to use it too and it did make very nice marmalade.

think it has to be seville as so bitter and sharp. Think there is something where you can use lemons and normal oranges.

THink Lapin knows this stuff. Post a message for her.

I saw some seville oranges in Waitrose today, but not in the fruit and veg section - they were with the sugar! I bought mine in a greengrocers - they always have the largest nicest ones. You can use other oranges but you won't get that tangy flavour and I believe that the marmalade won't be as clear. If you can't find Sevilles, try making your marmalade with ordinary oranges and at least two lemons and a grapefruit.
The stuff in the tins is called MaMade and makes nice marmalade, but not as good as the real thing.

Yep. Has to be Sevilles. They were in Waitrose yesterday, just near the entrance! I got mine in our local farm shop.

Hurry hurry though - Seville orange season will be over in a couple of weeks.....

Unfortunately we don't have a Waitrose anywhere nearby

I have tried several fruit and veg shop to now avail. Might try the market or look out for the tinned ones.

Thank you all.

You do need Seville oranges as they are much more bitter and carry more pectin, you won't get the proper bitter-sweet taste without them I'm afraid. Most supermarkets do stock them, Jan-Feb, but as I've not seen them in mine this year either I think maybe there's a deficit in the seville oranges mountain this year. At a pinch you can use Clementines of course, but they are smaller and so you need more to get plenty of juice! The tins are fine, I've used them in the past, but they do have lots of peel in them so if you like the ratio to be more jelly to peel than vice versa, you'll have to pick some out! There are loads of marmalade recipes online, just try Googling it! My mum lives in Spain and we made some last week from seville oranges picked from the trees in the village square, which dd found excellent fun, but puzzled the locals!

Really, princess? Is marmalade yet another of those British things then?

I was told that there has ben a problem with the supply of Seville oranges this year - my local greengrocer could only get hold of one lot & they sold out in a few days last week, so that's it for another year!
