Hi, I'm new to mumsnet but really need some advice, I started weaning my baby boy at 4 months (early I know but he was a big hungry boy!!) He really enjoyed it at first and wolfed down anything I gave to him, I thought I was being sensible only offering savoury food such as sweet potato, carrot etc first as soon as he had accepted these I started giving some fruit, as the weeks went on as he was getting bigger he started having a pudding after his meal (usually apple, pear or some other fruit puree), I noticed he started to prefer these but didn't really think much of it (which I am now regretting), over xmas he was being funny with his food but I thought that was because of all the attention so I just gave him what he would eat, then he had a bad cold and wouldn't eat anything, now he has been back on to his solids for about 2 weeks but is refusing to eat savoury, even gagging or nearly making himself sick, I've tried a couple of mixed fruit and veg but he still refuses. Any advice?? I am very concerned that he will never eat savoury again!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Lisa

My dd was pretty much the same and then I switched to 'baby led weaning' and this has made all the difference. Why dont you give it a go and see how you get on?

I'd agree with karen, have a look at Aitchs blog and try giving it a go.
It's much easier than pureeing and blending etc and allows chidlren to try pretty much everything.

Hi Lisa, I would say to just stick savory in front of him over and over and he'll soon get the message.
Steam a whole carrot and leave him with it. Try big chunks of steamed butternut squash as it's naturally sweet, wedges of sweet potato that have been steamed.
Just keep with it he will eat savory again I promise.

When my dd only wanted to eat yogurt I let her only eat yogurt. I still offered her other things but never forced the issue. Like all these things it was a phase that passed quickly, uneventfully and without stress or fuss. A couple of times I stirred her meal into yogurt if I really didn't want it going to the dog again. That worked. I was happy, she was happy.

At six months, food is about fun and flavours and textures and trying new things. He still gets most of his nutrition from milk. Don't make it a battleground.

Agree with other posts. Try more finger food. Steamed Carrots brocolli. Do not worry too much - you will have plenty of food battles and the more relaxed you are the easier it will be for you.

Thanks, I'm trying to be relaxed about it, but I worry that he won't get enough nutrition or that he won't be full up enough!! I guess it will just right itself eventually especially if I don't make it an issue. I was considering BLW but I wasn't too sure what to do - Aitch's blog is great, I'm off to sainsburys when the little one wakes to get some finger food!!!!
Thanks again

Good Luck Lisa! BLW for me made all the difference. My dd is ten months and we have just come back from lunch. She sat for nearly an hour in a high chair basically chomping away on anything she could get her hands on...she had a roll, cucumber, apple, bacon and even a few chips

don't give him any fruit purees for a while or anything else sweet. I had this problem with DD2, now at 16mo she eats much more variety but still prefers sweet things, they always do i think. remember that you are laying the basis for a healthy diet for the rest of his life.

VictorianSqualor · 19/01/2008 15:14

Lisa, your Lo is 6 months old, all his nutrients are coming from milk, so don't fret.

You're just getting him used to the idea of eating, textures and flavours etc for now.
