I've just chopped and sauted for ages and feeling like I've majorly messed this up .

Recipe called for 500 green lentils and 1.7 litres stock .I've used red split lentils -is that why the base I have now is mushy?

I've made this dish before with red lentils and it was fine .

I might add a load more carrot ..

How long did you cook the lentils for? Mine only go to mush if I’ve cooked them a bit too long.
It should say on the pack, I generally do it by eye but my Asda lentils say
Place 100g of lentils into a large saucepan with 500ml of water

Yes I probably did overcook them .
This is the recipe ,but it's for puy lentils so I suppose that's where I've gone wrong.Stupid .

Ah - green lentils take days and always hold their shape, but red lentils take 15 minutes and dissolve.

Add a tin of tomatoes to the mush and let it thicken up a bit. Use that as your 'sauce' with some sauteed vegetables added to it for texture. It will taste fine and you'll still get the nutrition from the lentils.

Just saw it's cottage pie rather than lasagne, sorry - have you cooked the potatoes yet? If not, slice them super thin, add veg to the mush as above, then layer sauce and potatoes to make a hot pot.

I think it's the type of lentil used rather than the amount of liquid. Red split lentils have the skin removed so they break down very quickly and have a softer texture. I tend to use tinned or packets of green/puy lentils though, so no real advice cooking them.

@MaChienEstUnDick oh thanks so much for the suggestions .I might do one dish with lasagna and one as a hot pot .
Sorry to ask another question but when you say then layer sauce and potatoes to make a hot pot. Do you mean like lasagna with alternating layers or just top the mush with potatoes ?
