Treat food for a pregnant diabetic suggestions please

Am visiting a friend who is approx 4 weeks pregnant, has diabetes and currently has sugars all over the place. Also looking after a 13 year old tonight while the lads go for a drink.

So, I would usually take a bottle of wine, however, with one driving, one underage and one pregnant, thats a no-go. If it was another friend, would buy a big tub of Ben and Jerry's.

Any suggestions? I could ask her, but then that would sort of ruin the 'turn up armed with lots of goodies as a surprise' plan that I had, of our girly night in, and she would no doubt say, oh you dont have to bring anything.

how about good old fashioned face packs and pamapering stuff? She might be a bit off food generally. iirc thorntons do a decent range of diabetic chocs if you want that. have fun.

You can get no added sugar ice cream from some places like health food shops.

You could also take something like flowers for her and some no sugar chocs.
You cold make a sugar free banana cake with some splenda in it.
Or you could suggest that you bring a meal and cook a chickpea curry or something else low GI.

Or you could treat them both to a movie (either go to cinema or rent one out).

Moopy - do they?! I might take a look.

I did think about face packs, avoid food altogether, however, she is not really a 'girly' girl, doesnt do make-up, not sure thats her thing, although the 13 YO might like it....!

She is not off food right now, in fact, quite hungry most of the time.

I might buy some yummy fruit, blueberry's etc, and some of that Thorntons Chocolate for diabetics, A bit healthy, bit indulgant.

She is a diabetic that always kicks against it and does not usually eat 'diabetic' food so to speak.

Shrooms - cant do movie as I have 18month old DD who is coming with me, am doing dvd anyway.

Does sugar free stuff taste ok? As I said in last post, she usually dislikes being treated as a 'diabetic' which she is gonna have to get used to now she is pregnant, but am thinking she might appreciate being considered, as often sh misses out of puds and stuff as she cant eat them. Tonight, want to spoil her a bit, although its early days with pregnancy, its a bit special still.

I have not tried the low sugar as I only see it when I go to the freezer to get the vegan stuff! I should imagine it tastes good though as sugar free choc bars always seemed nice.

You could always do a fruit and nut dessert such as baked peaches with almonds and cinnamon sprinkled over and served with some soya cream (low fat so good for diabetics who also generally have to watch fat I think)

PavlovtheCat · 18/01/2008 14:26

Shrooms - yes think fat is a watcher too. She can eat potatoes, but if so cant have rice, so carbs is something she watches.

I also know that when she comes to dinner she can eat anything we cook, but needs to know what is in it before she eats so she can adjust insulin accordingly, so maybe a surprise wont be a good idea if she has already taken her insulin.

Oh I thought I understood her diabetes, but appears not!

Well who said it has to be a surprise? you could always call her and tell her you are bringing a treat round and I'm sure she'll still appreciate it just as much and be glad that she could take the right number of insulin units to cover it!

all went tits up anyway and she popped over to keep 'me' company after my afternoon went to hell! Her and 13 YO came over, had coffee and juice and watched shite tele, enjoyed by all!

As it happens, in a rush in supermarket bought smoothies for us, as I did not have time to make them from fresh. Upon taking a swig when I got home realised it was very sweet and she cant drink that anyway! So what I did get was no good either! Next time, will do dinner, I know what she can and cant eat savour wise!
