Perhaps a daft question - but how can you tell if a Swede (the vegetable - not the nationality) has gone off??

I've just found one (still shrink wrapped) languishing at the bottom of my vegetable drawer in the fridge - it's well past it's "use by" date (won't tell you what it is ) - it still feels very firm....

How can I tell if it's still edible??? Don't want to poison the DC and DH by using it.....

cut it up, check the inside doesn't smell or look/feel off.. if all ok - use

pootleflump · 15/01/2008 16:50

It will start going mouldy at the bottom, I usually use it past sbd as long as no mould

FarcicalAlienQueen · 15/01/2008 16:52

can't see any mould on it......

right I'll chop it up and see how it looks - if ok it's going in...

and if no-one wakes up tomorrow feeling sick I'll come back tomorrow evening and tell you what the use by date was

They last for ages so it should be fine as long as it's not mouldy. I find use by dates are generally nonsense for things like root veg.

thanks

well - update is that - DH has been sick for the last 24hrs.....however he was feeling unwell from Sunday evening - so pretty sure it wasn't my past it's Use by date Swede - as I - and the DS's are fine - and DH didn't really feel like eating anything so only had a few mouthfuls.

Use by date was................... 9th December

Well I used a swede that was 6 weeks past its use by date and we're all still alive.

People used to store root vegetables all winter long, so I agree that so called "use by" dates are nonsensical.
