Do any chippies do veggie sausages but the chippy sausage kind?

If that even makes sense.. I love a proper veggie sausage and am also partial to a fake meat one, but I mean one that is like a chippy sausage, not a normal sausage?

My local chippy has asked if there's anything people want added to the menu.. I need to know if it's a thing before I suggest Grin

I've not come across it. Do you mean like a battered sausage? The Richmond vegan ones might be good in batter.

The vegetarian thing at my local chipshop is chickpea fritters.

I used to live around the corner from a chip shop that would batter and cook the veggie sausages I took them. 😁

ErrolTheDragon · 05/06/2022 22:14

Or do you mean a veggie version of a saveloy?

Oh I'm so tempted to do this!

I normally just settle for chips and mushy peas because their only veg options are a very oily large spring roll or pukka pie.

That is absolute genius- why have I never thought of asking that!

It was nearly 20 years ago and I moved out of the area. Found myself back there a couple of weeks back and the lovely old guy remembered me. ❤️

Rather confused the other people in the queue by asking me where my sausage was! 😂

I love this! As a teen I lived next door to a chippy but wasn't a big fan at the time of fried food. They used to cook me a portion of cod in the microwave so I wasn't left out when everyone else was getting something.

Is it possible to batter a sausage at home? Our chippy charges £3 for a jumbo sausage! (And has no veggie option) Maybe in the deep fat fryer? Id love a recipe if anyone has one.

Dipping a veggie sausage in batter that has been used for meat & fish, then frying in oil that has also been used for meat & fish, seems rather against the spirit of vegetarianism.

Ghostofborleyrectory · 06/06/2022 17:37

I know there is a veggie chippy in Bristol that sells them and also one in Manchester, I looked on Google out of interest as a veggie myself, and one in Birmingham which looks amazing!

PronounMadness · 06/06/2022 17:37

I don’t eat meat because I don’t like it. I still eat fish so it wasn’t an issue for me back then. (It’s been nearly 20 years now……).

Ghostofborleyrectory · 06/06/2022 17:39

Mono in Glasgow also do a vegan battered sausage chippy tea.

onepieceoflollipop · 06/06/2022 17:41

@Georgyporky
some chippies have 2 or more friers
one for the chips that they can also use for veggie stuff
One of my family is gluten free so if the chip oil has only had chips in (no batter) then it is often gf.
worth checking with individual shops if certain restrictions are needed/preferred Smile

TyneTeas · 06/06/2022 17:42

There's a chippy in my area that does vegan 'fish' and chips (banana blossoms) and says it does vegan sausages and fish cakes (no idea what is in them!)

But it would definitely seem to be a thing you can get

Unless you're veggie because you're viscerally disgusted by the idea of meat, or dislike the taste of traces of it, then why would it be against the spirit? No animals have died or suffered for your food, any traces of animal material will be so small they can't affect your health, and okay you're supporting a business that's based around selling animal products but you could argue the same about any food shop or cafe that isn't fully vegan.
