Hosting a BBQ for about 10 people (3 kids age 3-6) next weekend and we need ideas for sides please. I'm fine with what we need for meat but clueless what to do as a side. Please help! Anyone have any nice interesting ideas for salads etc please? What dessert would you serve?

Bbq dessert is always bananas, chocolate squares and tin foil here. Poke the chocolate through the banana skin, wrap in foil and bake.

Okay, we had a barbecue yesterday and I definitely won salads. We had:

  • tabbouleh (half a cup of bulgar wheat, cover with boiling water and let absorb; finely chopped big bunch of parsley; big bunch of mint; four big tomatoes, de skinned and deseeded, chopped small; a few spring onions, chopped small; juice of two lemons, half a cup of olive oil, lots of salt; toss together)
  • beetroot and goat cheese (packed of non-vinegary cooked beetroot, two packs of goat cheese logs, packet of rocket, half a jar of grilled peppers, a packet of cooked lentils, halved cherry tomatoes; mix all up together except the goat cheese with some normal salad dressing, then spread goat cheese on top)
  • Caesar salad
  • Greek salad
  • my friend's mum's legendary 80s broccoli salad, which sounds disgusting and is delicious (mix a cup of mayonnaise with 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar and 2 tablespoons sugar; chop a head of broccoli into very small florets; very finely chop a red onion; big handful of raisins; mix broccoli, raisins and onion with mayonnaise mix and leave in the fridge for 2 hours; when ready to serve, add a handful of chopped dry-roasted peanuts and bacon bits eg either frizzled pancetta cubes or fake bacon sprinkles - or, in a pinch, crushed frazzles)

That amount fed 11 adults and only had a few leftovers so if you want to overcater, maybe add a normal mixed salad and some corn cobs on the barbecue.

Alternatively, if you've got one of those grill holders that people use for fish, tender stem broccoli and asparagus are amazing on the barbecue - olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, maybe chilli if you like it, on the barbecue until a bit blackened but not total cinders.

Watermelon, cucumber, mint and feta salad always goes down well and looks pretty.
Cous cous with harissa roasted chickpeas, red onion, peppers, parsley and coriander.
Home made coleslaw
Potato salad but I prefer a lighter yoghurt dressing with finely sliced red onion, chives, parsley and plenty of rock salt and black pepper.
Sliced beef tomatoes, mozzarella, finely diced red onion and basil. Balsamic vinegar, olive oil, black pepper and sea salt.
And a green salad.
I'm not a dessert person so usually do fresh fruit skewers, a huge bowl of strawberries, ice cream and cream.

Actually if you have small children I'd do a plate of crudités with a couple of dips. If not doing hot dogs or burgers I'd also include some form of bread, sliced French sticks or flat breads done on the grill, brushed with garlic butter.

I make the best potato salad.

Decent mini potatoes
Home made mayonnaise (it makes all the difference)
Chopped spring onions, chives, mint, parsley Finely chopped couple of fresh anchovies

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden : that broccoli salad is a staple in Denmark. I was sceptical when I first moved here but I love it!

Have to agree with pineapple for dessert. Tastes amazing barbequed.

I do a tomato salad that always goes down well (it's basically from Jamie Oliver):
Small, v finely chopped red onion
Bunch of finely chopped flat leaf parsley
Tomatoes cut in chunks

Mix all together.

Then salt well, add a good glug of olive oil and some red wine vinegar.

A proper (mostly) green salad that is a mix of flavours and textures is a must I think. I usually do mixed leaves of some sort, cucumber and spring onion. Add some chargrilled green veg - asparagus is my preference, but you could do some sliced leeks or tender stem broccoli. Top with toasted pine nuts and feta cheese and make a lemon/garlic/olive oil/yoghurt/mustard/ salt/herb dressing (add a sprinkle of sugar if it feels like it needs it).

Couscous served with chargrilled veg. Cook the couscous in some stock. Make a tahini/lemon/yoghurt dressing (add a bit of chilli if you like some heat).
