Your recommendations for best veggie burgers

I'm not a vegetarian but not at all keen on meat.
DH has bought burgers for dinner and for me they are one of the yuckiest foods around (unless it's a cheeseburger from McDonald's!).
Usually I'll just have some roasted vegetables and halloumi in a brioche bun but quite fancy trying a veggie burger again.
I think I've tried most brands over the years but gave up on them but thinking (hoping) they might have improved somewhat in the intervening years.
So what are your go to meat free alternatives to a burger ?

I like the Strong Roots burger. I'm not a huge fan of things that are meant to taste/look like meat. There's a cafe near me that does a quinoa burger that is amazing but I think it's made there rather than bought in.

Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers...

mosside · 30/05/2022 10:52

Do you want pretend meat or a bean burger type thing?

drivinmecrazy · 30/05/2022 11:20

Preferably not a pretend meat.
I really enjoy Tesco plant based spicy bean burgers but I think I've over done those

I used to love Burger King spicy bean burgers! And I'm not veggie

Oh, I was going to suggest the "Beyond Burger", as they look very like real burgers. Also the Moving Mountains burgers. Those are the two I buy the most.

Onion bhajis make the best veggie burgers. Buy pre-made and mash, or buy big ones and squish.

when I lived with a veggie ex I would buy extra ones from takeaway and freeze.

really nice with raita and mango chutney.

PriamFarrl · 30/05/2022 13:48

It’s now hard to get burgers that aren’t fake meat.

I agree with Strong Roots, their stuff is nice.

Me too! GoodLife Spicy Beanburgers are a pretty close match if you can get hold of some.

jenny91x · 30/05/2022 13:54

Yes, the mozzarella Linda McCartney burgers are luuurrvley 😛

FionaJT · 30/05/2022 13:54

Sorry, that was supposed to quote the comment above about Burger King, but obviously failed :)

toastofthetown · 30/05/2022 13:55

I second the suggestion of onion bhajis as burgers. Following an Indian theme, if you want to cook yourself have Fresh India by Meera Sodha, the butternut squash seekh kebabs work well as burgers (as I found when I forgot to halve the squash in a recipe and couldn’t form them into kebabs) and they froze well and cooked from frozen.

I’ve also really enjoyed Glamorgan style burgers, again not sure if they are available premade, but simple enough to make and like the butternut ones, can freeze them and cook from frozen.

If you have the time to make your own then Jack Monroe's red kidney bean burgers are quick and easy to make (and taste great too). They are also ridiculously cheap. You grate onion and carrot, fry that with cumin seeds (and chilli and garlic if you have them) and then mash in a can or two of red kidney beans. It helps a lot to boil the beans for 5 mins or so to get them really soft (though some bands are really squishy straight out of the can),

Sarah raven also has a great recipe for split pea burgers - these are even more delicious but are much more of a faff to make.

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 30/05/2022 20:31

I really like Goodlife spicy bean burgers.

If I'm having fake meat burgers then I really like the Tesco plant chef ones. They're pretty cheap too.

Sainsbury's do a sweet potato bhaji which would work really well as a burger. They are 😋😋😋

If you're up for making your own batch and freezing - these are very good

I should probably make my own, not keen on the fake meat ones, especially beyond burger.
I like a bean burger, but hate sweet corn, they are hard to avoid.
I usually just have halloumi.Smile

peggypogpeg · 30/05/2022 21:04

My faves are green cuisine. They are burger style - but not like the other fake meat that have really gone in on the fleshy texture which i hate. They are firmer than these others and a much nicer texture and a good alternative to bean burgers if you want to try something else

peggypogpeg · 30/05/2022 21:05

I love halloumi - I think thats the link to green cuisine - its that firm protein bite without going 'fleshy' or beans

winniesanderson · 30/05/2022 21:13

These are really nice, a slightly chewy texture which is different to most veg/pulse based burgers I've tried. Their Italian version is especially good.
