Best non-dairy butter substitutes

My DH is on a mission to reduce the saturated fat in his diet. One of the (many!) things we're looking at is switching out butter for a non-dairy alternative.

What are your favourite non-dairy spreads and butter substitutes for cooking, baking and spreading on toast?

My original plan was to trial a few over time, but there are so many different ones, I thought some recommendations would help me find a starting point.

Overall fat content isn't a problem, so I'm not looking for anything 'light' or reduced calorie - just non-dairy that actually tastes nice and works in cakes would be great to start with.

Tesco olive spread is good as is the Aldi version of it.

HimalayanSnowcock · 23/05/2022 12:42

I use Tomor or Pure sunflower spreads. I only seem to like sunflower spreads.

maudesvagina · 23/05/2022 12:43

Pure sunflower spread

Flora lighter is the one we like best.

I've tried a few (son is allergic to milk) and this is our favourite. It's one of the few branded products we buy.

I have no idea about fat content but the following butter style blocks are good, in order of deliciousness:
Naturli
Violife vioblock
Flora dairy free block (I prefer salted version)

Honeyroar · 23/05/2022 12:49

Pure. The non sunflower one is best imo.

There are other ways to cut down on sat fat; presumably butter isn't eaten in huge quantities? Is cutting out cake a better option?

I prefer to live without the chemicals in the substitutes, & have never found one that tastes nice

DD like the Sainsbury's Plant Pioneers vegan spread.
You really won't get that much saturated fat from eating butter on things. It's a bit of a 1970s thing. I'd rather reduce my butter intake than eat chemicals. I do sometimes use stork in a cake because Mary Berry says I should 😂

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 23/05/2022 19:36

Naturli vegan block is almost indistinguishable from butter and made with very little vegetable fat so much better for you.
honestly as a vegan I'd always encourage people to eat less animal products but health wise butter is better than vegetable fat based spread.

Sofasogood1 · 23/05/2022 19:39

I would rather eat natural saturated fat than any of this ultra processed crap!!

I agree with above cutting out cake would be more useful...

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend anything over butter in terms of better health.

I have a milk allergy so am forced to use non-dairy spreads, vitalite is my favourite and I’ve had compliments on the cakes I’ve made with it so it can’t be that bad a substitute. Like other posters on here though, I’d avoid the processed stuff if I could, hence I buy the rest of the family proper butter!

knowinglesseveryday · 26/05/2022 09:17

Just use olive oil for cakes, and for dipping bread. Dump the processed margarine.

DustyTulips · 26/05/2022 09:24

I’m allergic to dairy, and I think Pure sunflower works best as a general spread, in a roux etc. I don’t bake much, but no-one complains when I make dairy cakes with it.

DustyTulips · 26/05/2022 09:24

Fairy cakes! Most certainly NOT dairy cakes!

TwilightSkies · 26/05/2022 09:26

Proper butter is honestly the best option.

AnnaMagnani · 26/05/2022 09:34

Just don't use butter.

Seriously, DH has his sandwiches without a spread, I thought he was weird but he's won me over as couldn't be bothered to make different sandwiches.

You won't miss it. Also cutting out cake is a more useful health intervention.

spinachmonster · 26/05/2022 12:44

Flora spread (not the buttery one) or the Flora block is nice.

I found adding a v small sprinkle of salt to toast when transitioning was good. Then soon left it out.

spinachmonster · 26/05/2022 12:45

Dairy industry is so cruel it's great not to support it too.
