Bread most like subway?

I’m on a long term mission to try and get my youngest to put on weight. Part of the GPS advice was to try and give her favourite foods as much as possible. Her absolute favourite thing to eat in the whole world is a meatball marinara sub from subway.

I thought that I might try and recreate it at home but I’m not sure what bread would be the most similar, I don’t want to go to all the bother just to have her reject it as it’s ‘too different’. 🙄 Any tips most appreciated!

Aldi have started to do “metro” rolls and they are a rip off of subway rolls.

Do you have a subway near you? In my area the app too good to go (saving food waste) has several subways who give away bread and cookies for a small amount in the mornings, you just have to keep an eye on the app and purchase to go and collect at the correct time

Apparently subway bread is too sweet to qualify as bread. It’s confectionary in Ireland and cake in the UK (according to my googling).

I only mention this because you are looking for what will be most similar and not be rejected. Similar looking things from supermarkets might not hit the mark.

Could you go into your local subway and ask the manager. They might be willing to sell you just the end of the day bread (and you could freeze it at home).

You can buy sub type rolls from most supermarkets, but any soft roll would probably hit the spot once it’s filled with meatballs and marinara sauce!

The Warburton sandwich rolls are good - they’re always soft and stay fresh for ages. They’re round rather than long, but if you chopped it into two halves she might not notice!

Otherwise maybe a brioche hot dog bun if the sweetness is an important factor.

Thanks for the tips, I got some of the aldi rolls though they only had the 7 grain variety in stock. My daughter ate all of the meatballs and said that they were delicious and ate about half of the bread saying that it was ok but she would like to try the Italian version next time. I’m taking that as a win!
