I've made a descision after dithering for about 12 months, Im now a VEGETARIAN, any useful advice - and also an egg question...

Ive been a veggie before, it was when I was about 12 - 14 but gave up becaus emy mum cooked all the meals.

Ive never been a meat eater really, never touched mince growing up or any red meat, I just stuck to chicken and bacon.

Recently i tried to eat a sausage and just couldn't (no rude jokes please ) and Ive just really, really gone off chicken which was my last meat to eat really. I made spanish chicken, loaded the families plates up and put 2 dices of chicken on my plate, and proceded to cut a piece in half and i felt like vomiting whilst trying to chew it.

So i think thats my body and mind made up for me!

My question is, although I know alot of people to consider eggs OK for veggies, Im concerned as I only eat freerange eggs and have noticed that in alot of veggie meals theres are egg products, not a problem in itself as I do plan to eat eggs, but only free range! I dont want to endorse any batteryhen products.

Is there any veggie ranges that guarentee free range ingredients?

Like I said am totally new to this (well not really as ive had meat free alternatives whilst the family eats meat for years) but now that ive 'come out' as 'real' and made a concious descision NOT to eat meat anymore (not just because of the taste) its a bit daunting making sure i dont slip up against my newly cemented morals.

I don't think any veggie stuff guarantees that it uses free-range eggs. not that I've noticed anyway but I could be wrong.
I am trying very hard atm to make my food from scratch instead of buying prepared stuff though so if you do that at least you know what's going into it

If it has the vegetarian society green tick (not just any old green tick, only the veg soc approval one) it is made with free range eggs.

M&S only used free range eggs in its meals.

Sainsburys Taste The Difference range uses free range eggs.

Now... what actually constitutes an ethically, humnanely produced free range egg...? That's a whole nuther thread .

anything endorsed by the vegetarian society only uses free range eggs. also the co-op list on their ingredients whether the eggs in the product are battery or free range.

i feel the same way you do but it is very hard avoiding all prducts that contain egg (or milk for that matter - i would like to only eat/drink organic milk due to the conditions the cows are kept in- but is very difficult.) almost everything contains eggs or milk and you generally don't know the source - biscuits, cakes, crackers, pasta etc etc. the only failsafe option is to buy organic products, which i would do if i could afford it

It's an absolute arse to try and stick to though. Well, I find it is. I don't really buy ready meals or convenience food, but I still find it frustrating. It makes me so angry that I can't buy half of the things in the supermarket without condoning what I consider to be animal cruelty.

Ice cream. Bought cakes. Bakery products. Eating in cafes and restaurants. Eating at friends' houses.

You either have to become a selfless, dedicated earth mother who only eats in McDonalds (they use free range eggs apparently) or you have to compromise your values sometimes.

If you really feel strongly about not eating eggs or milk that may have been treated inhumanely then become vegan.

Most specialist vegetarian products use free range eggs, but supermarket own brands I am more wary of.
