Christmas cake and Blue Cheese?

Does anyone know where this idea is from?

I had never heard of it until DH's family insisted I try it years ago, and it's sooo lovely!

We have established it is most likely a northern or london thing (as that is where his family is from) but does anyone else eat fruit cake like this?!

I've heard of it. I think it's a Northern thing - Yorkshire maybe?

Tinker · 11/01/2008 21:04

I've heard of it (hate blue cheese myself) Am sure its northern. Have heard of xmas cake with just cheese really, which does sound gorgeous.

Pollyanna · 11/01/2008 21:05

My mum is the only person I know who does this - she comes from Yorkshire.

mazzystar · 11/01/2008 21:05

Is it an eat up the christmas leftovers thing? Its what we've got left and as I can't afford to but much food this month.......do you think the DC will eat for tea tomorrow?

Buda · 11/01/2008 21:07

DH does this but not with blu - it's Wensleydale or Lancashire. His Dad was from Yorkshire.

I was aghast. But it does work for some strange reason!

He also does beetroot with Shepards Pie!

HAdn't thought of trying it with other cheeses...I was too busy gagging at the thought of it when MIl handed me a plate with cake and stilton..but after eating a teeny morsel to be polite I was converted!

Not even leftovers, DH and I won't eat christmas cake without it now. We have only just got round to eating he cake as I only iced it at new year

I'm originally from Lancashire and fruit cake with Lancashire cheese was always eaten at Christmas! Even remember my Grandad eating cheese with apple pie - strange lot us Northerners!!!

yetanothername · 13/01/2008 18:36

I'm from Yorkshire and we eat Christmas cake with WHITE Stilton... now I'm only a little bit further south in Lincolnshire I find it hard to get hold of non-blue Stilton! I make do with Wensleydale usually.

Never heard of it with blue cheese! I love blue cheese, maybe I'll try it, sounds a bit scary though!

I do it too, also from north (but further up - Northumberland). Step-father (county Durham, one up from Yorkshire) not only does the Christmas cake and stilton thing but also (and this is genius) heats up mince pies, takes the lid off, and pops a thin slice of stilton underneath before closing up again. If you thought the christmas cake thing was good, believe me, you'll love this ... [drools]

yetanothername · 13/01/2008 19:24

When I was at uni my fellow Yorkshire housemate and myself thought heating mince pies was just a southern thing!

hennipenni · 13/01/2008 19:24

MY BIL (midlands) eats stilton, mince pie and port all together.

brightwell · 14/01/2008 00:07

I like Christmas cake with wensleydale, can't try it with blue cheese as we've finished the christmas cake!
