I'm taking my DC's (dd6 and ds12) on a Museum trip today and we're having a picnic for lunch. I've never been on a picnic, I dont think my dc's have either so Im quite at a loss of what else to pack. I've made us all sandwiches, packed fruit and crisps with drinks. We're not a fussy crew, although we can't have tomatoes or celery. (Allergies)

What are your go-to picnic foods apart from the standard sandwich and crisp with a drink combo?

Quiche or frittata. Wraps. Flask of coffee for the adults. Cake! Sausage rolls. Hummus and veg sticks. I love a picnic, going for one today. Im taking cake and others are bringing quiche, pasta salad and other savory things.

I think the sandwiches, crisps, fruit & drinks sound great - enjoy your day!

LightningAndRainbows · 01/05/2022 07:10

Scotch egg?

RampantIvy · 01/05/2022 07:11

Envious that you have nicer weather than we do.

Icantfindtherightshoe · 01/05/2022 07:12

I’ve made this a few times for a picnic at sports event Here take homemade coleslaw, bag of green leaves and cherry tomatoes. Along with plates and forks in the picnic basket. Car on site so weight not an issue

Icantfindtherightshoe · 01/05/2022 07:21

@ivykaty44 Oooh Delia. I'm definitely saving it for another day 😀

Sometimes we have a supermarket picnic- things you can pick up on the way. Crisps, grapes, cherry toms, carrot sticks, sausuge rolls/scotch eggs/pork pies, yogurt tubes, babybell cheese, cake bars/biscuits.

Other days I make hard boiled boiled eggs, a picnic loaf, celery sticks spread with peanut butter and/or cream cheese, cold ham etc.

Picnic loaf- use a whole bread loaf.
Slice of the whole top and keep. Pull out the bread leaving a strong crust.
Make spicy bolognese type sauce and stir in the bead crumbs.
Layer salad, cheese and meat sauce into the loaf until it's over full.
Put the lid back in and wrap. Put weights on top and put in the fridge overnight.
It slices into a savoury, almost cake.

That onion tart sounds delicious.

orchidsunrise · 01/05/2022 07:30

Don't see what's wrong with what you've packed OP - sounds perfect for a picnic! Maybe add a chocolate bar for a treat?

I often do pesto pasta for picnics, but then you are left with Tupperware so depends if you hoped to throw most of the wrapping away.

Icantfindtherightshoe · 01/05/2022 07:32

@ChairCareOh Nope. Never had a picnic before. Not that I can remember anyway Confused I'm not going to go into my childhood as I've just recovered from it (It wasn't the best)

Thank you for the ideas guys. Making a list and letting the kids select the final options. Knowing my luck they'll want sweets 😂

I hard boil eggs and pop them back in their box to transport, they are oddly always popular. If I'm being lazy I get the supermarket sausage rolls/cocktail sausages/mini scotch eggs along with carrot sticks/mini stuffed peppers/falafel etc.

picklemewalnuts · 01/05/2022 07:39

Ah, @Icantfindtherightshoe ! You're in for a treat! Make this the start of many.

More ideas, slightly grown up-
strawberries.
French stick that you pull pieces off.
Brie
Houmos
Asti or Prosecco.

Get a picnic kit- blanket, plastic plates, cups, knives and forks. Ours was ikea. Keep it washed and packed in a cool bag so you can just grab it along with your food.

Don't get a hamper/backpack. The stuff is often too heavy, expensive, and the food doesn't fit in the spaces.

It's a fab, leisurely summer afternoon activity. Find some favourite parks and chill out with a book while the children play.

When mine were quite small we had many many garden picnics. They still rock. The tots can play and potter while you sit and chill, and everyone plays and nibbles and plays and nibbles. Takes all the stress and mess out of feeding toddlers and pre schoolers.

PurBal · 01/05/2022 07:50

Pork pies / sausage rolls. Cherry tomatoes. Crudités and hummus. Cheese (pre portioned).

Icantfindtherightshoe · 01/05/2022 07:56

@picklemewalnuts I have a load of plastic plates and cutlery that I stored away for a Christening that never happened. I might use them.

Honestly everyone thank you Flowers I hope you all have a lovely day, the Weather is a bit grim where I am but we're not letting that stop us

If you catch the 'picnic bug' (personally I love a picnic) there is loads you can do by switching the bread and fillings.
Think filled baguettes with tuna crunch, eggs mayo and crispy bacon, Brie and cranberry.
Pita filled with falafel, salad, mint and yoghurt dressing.
Filled bagels (cream cheese and smoked salmon, avocado with chilli flakes, cold roast beef, pickled gherkins, rocket and horseradish mayo)
Wraps filled with flavoured chicken pieces and salad, hummus and grated carrot.
Flat breads with chicken tikka pieces, mango chutney, spinach, cucumber and raita.
Components of a ploughman's.
Cheese and cracker selection with pickles and chutney.
Cold pizza slices

liveforsummer · 01/05/2022 09:01

If the weather is awful, if it's a decent sized museum it's probably got an indoor seating area you can eat. Dd2 didn't eat sandwiches 🙄 so we alternate between filled wraps or pitta breads or alternatively a pasta salad then add in some mini cucumbers and or raw pepper, fruit often some precut mango or melon, or a tub of grapes/strawbs a tub of mini sausage rolls or cocktail sausages, bagged snack (crisps, rice cakes, popcorn) and a pack of chocolatey biscuits maybe choc fingers or similar. Other snacks can be pepperami, baby bel. Some times dc will take their own in a backpack to save me being the pack horse 😆
