Vegetarian / Gluten free brunch

magicstar1 · 27/04/2022 18:53

I'm doing brunch on Sunday for five of us. I have one vegetarian and one coeliac coming, so I'm looking for ideas for them.

I'm doing the usual sausages, bacon etc. Also, doing pancakes and gf pancakes with maple butter, different syrups and fruit.
I'll pick up some croissants, and make a few muffins ... ordinary and gf.

I'm a bit stuck for the vegetarian...has anyone got ideas? Thanks

Frittata, assuming the vegetarian eats eggs? Greek yogurt and seeds to go with the fruit.

Your menu sounds like a lot of work for the number of people. Personally I would try to make more dual-purpose things rather than gluten free and gluten versions of the same thing. GF pancakes are fine for everyone if you find a good recipe, and I would consider Brazilian cheese bread instead of the muffins because it's gf and delicious, and you have enough sweeter baked goods with the pastries.

Poached eggs, mushroom and beans with toast? Hash browns?

if you want it to be a similar meal then Linda McCartney Lincolnshire sausages are vegetarian and quite nice.
Quorn bacon is rank, it smells like dirty wet dishcloths. In fact I can’t recommend any veggie/vegan bacon but these bacon bits are quite nice, although stupidly expensive.
Vivera

I wouldn’t expect it though tbh. I’d just be happy with knowing that anything I’m eating hadn’t been anywhere near the meat that was cooking.

Veggie sausages - check for GF
Egg
Baked beans
Fried tomato
Hash browns
Mushroom

That would be pretty substantial.

For five people coming, you seem to have five totally different breakfasts available!

What’s the etc with the sausage and bacon? I agree with the other posters that if you do mushroom, hash browns, tomatoes, beans etc then all you need is gluten free and veggie sausages to accommodate those guests. Veggie sausages are miles better than veggie bacon.

Or you could do something like avocado and eggs on posh toast for everyone with gluten free bread and bacon as options.

I would ditch the pancakes entirely and do fruit with yoghurt, granola and maple as a sweet type option instead. I’d maybe do croissants or muffins but not both.

Fwiw as a veggie, I’d always rather the choice of having non meaty bits of a traditional breakfast than being presented with a separate meal of pancakes and sweet stuff. I wonder if your gf and veggie friends might be the same. I’d always eat what I was given with thanks though.

I see what you mean. DH and FIL expect a full fry up. MIL will have a bit but also like gf pancakes. I’ll have pancakes. BIL is the vegetarian and will eat pancakes & pastries, but want something savoury too lol.
I’ll ditch the muffins, and cut back a bit. I always up doing too much alright.

Careful with cross contamination for the coeliac if you are making pancakes, muffins etc in your kitchen. Some things can be made GF for everyone. I usually make GF stuff first and then seal it up while I prepare everything else.

Singapore noodles - for vegetarians, veg only, for celiacs you can add chicken and prawns separately.

Vegetable lasagna with gluten free fresh lasagna sheets. Delicious.

Mushroom risotto - make sure you buy gluten free chicken stock.

A plater of antipasto to start with - olives, artichoke hearts, cheese, sundried tomatoes, roasted capsicum - can be served normal or glutten free rice crackers.

Dearmariacountmein · 28/04/2022 09:33

I’m Vegan and also have NCGS so can’t eat gluten.

I agree it seems like a lot of work and unless you have impeccable food contamination procedure could make your friend ill I.e most celiacs can’t use a toaster that’s had normal bread in.

Just do GF for everyone. Sainsburies has a gluten free sourdough that is passable. You can look at toppings like mushroom, hummus, avocado, Spanish tomato salsa. Then fresh fruit and pancakes.

Gf, df here. And I do brunches.

Mexican is your friend here. It can be cooked ahead and goes with bacon and eggs so everyone can have some.

Add cornbread.

Or sweet potato/pumpkin casserole things also work well being filling, tasty and go with bacon and eggs.

For brunch?! Those aren’t brunch foods.

They are for me and I'm in Australia. Risottos, noodles, veg pasta....all brunch dishes provided we are talking brunch as a meal combining breakfast and lunch (usually from 11 to 3)

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2022 12:17

In the uk, if you served someone lasagne for brunch, you’d think they’d gone mad. It’s much more of a substantial breakfast meal than an early lunch one.

Thank you for that. Here in Australia brunch is for people who want to do one meal only instead of breakfast and lunch. You can have a fry up with the lot but options like rice, noodles, eggs and vegetables have taken over, specially the gluten free variety.

I m vegetarian, I loves to eat tomotos, potato, beetroot and carrot. I also likes to eat green spinach.
