substituting tinned lentils for dried

I have a recipe for a sausage casserole which requires a 400 g tin of tinned lentils. I don't have any but do have dried.

The casserole simmers for 1 hour. Can I substitute and if so roughly how much? Will I need to soak at all first?

A relative lentil virgin!

Depending on which lentils you're using they cook in about 20-25 mins so will be fine simmering for an hour. If they're red they may even be too broken up so you could put them in half an hour from the end. Puy or green / brown should be okay.

Wash well but don't soak.

I'd use about 40g dried I think.

Thanks - I have red so will add some half way through, I'll do a little guestimating on the whole weight thing so don't worry!

A 400g tin usually has about 235g of lentils. Dried lentils weigh about twice to three times as much when cooked, so I'd use 100g dried.
