I’m a very experimental cook and can usually whip up dishes by looking at what we’ve got in pantry and fridge. I am working on a shelf in our kitchen diner to have some fab cookbooks to dip into from time to time - what do you recommend?

Note: I am so used to just using websites for recipe inspiration I want actual physical books to put on an actual shelf

Cuisines we like are …… bold and spicy! We’ve got Indian covered by the way so that’s not needed :) but apart from that Particularly like -

Chinese
Vietnamese
Indonesian/Malaysian
Moroccan
Middle Eastern
Persian
African
Thai
Turkish

Will welcome any books ideas for books you think will suit the shelf!

I love Meera Sodha - all three of her books produce recipes that are consistently delicious, and well written. I know you say you have India food covered, but East is wider than that and a real gem. I have a couple of books by Sabrina Ghayour, which I enjoy and use frequently, especially Bazaar. Ottolenghi’s books are also very good, I’ve cooked a few recipes recently from Test Kitchen all excellent; I don’t own it, but will probably pick it up at some point.

Splendid - great suggestions thank you! By the way re: Indian food I’ve got it covered as in I just cook home food and that’s my Indian food sorted ie I’m Indian born and bred and only been in the uk for a decade or so :) will definitely look up all the books including Meera Sodha as I’ve heard lots of good things!

Following as I'd like a really good Thai recipe book as I love the food but have never learnt how to cook it!

I am Indian also as a disclaimer. The ONE Indian cookbook I learned a few new recipes from was Suvir Saran’s Indian Home Cooking. His other book Masala Farm is also great.
I like the Roasting Tin around the world.
The Rangoon Sisters cookbook for Burmese food.
Weligama for Sri Lankan food.
Ottolenghi especially Jerusalem for Middle Eastern food. I didn’t like Sabrina Ghayour as much. I felt I had to adjust my seasoning a bit too much for my Indian palate. I prefer Ottolenghi.

For Chinese food, look for a book n'y Kenneth Lo. It will be out of print but he's classic cuisine.

Atul kochhar's 'curries of the world'? It has an amazing range of curries from Africa, the middle East and South East Asia, it got me into trying some cuisines I'd never have considered otherwise.

Every recipe book shelf should contain this www.amazon.co.uk/Ballymaloe-Cookery-Course-Darina-Allen/dp/1856267296/ref=nodl_

It hasn't failed me yet, it's basically a cookery course in one book.

For Indonesian food- Fire Islands

Middle Eastern- obviously Ottolenghi but also Sally Butcher. I have her book Veggiestan and love it but there's also a non-veggie book called Persepolis.

Chinese- Kwoklynn Wan's Chinese takeaway cookbooks. I've enjoyed everything I've made so far and it's all very quick to make.

A good place to check out books is the website Eat Your Books. Once you've identified a few you can look them up in the library section and see the notes (reviews) people have left for individual recipes. It's quite American but the European user base is growing and I've tried recipes I wouldn't have otherwise picked out. www.eatyourbooks.com/library/192841/fire-islands-recipes-from-indonesia#notes

Persiana by Sabrina Ghayour and Sweet Savory Spicy by Sarah Tiong (a Masterchef Australia contestant) are both excellent and would fit your tastes!
