i've got a huge chicken to cook for dinner tonight and ive got no foil.
I cant get to the shops coz im waiting for something to be delivered that i cant miss.
Can i still cook it or is it best to have it wrapped in foil??

I always cook without foil and then the skin goes crispy!

ArmadilloDaMan · 08/01/2008 11:04

yes. I don't use foil on mine.

If you spread butter on top (some do) it might burn though.

calzone · 08/01/2008 11:05

olive oil, salt and pepper.

whack it in.

voila!!

brimfull · 08/01/2008 11:06

I never use foil

MerlinsBeard · 08/01/2008 11:07

i don't use foil

in fact, i asked on here how to get the perfect chicken and i put olive oil in teh top and salt and pepper and (this is the important bit) cook it upside down for the foirst 20/30 mins then turn it over and finish cooking it the right way up.

tis yummy and the skin is all crispy and nice

MMMmmmmmmm

I don't use foil either, no need as long as you baste the chicken regularly to stop it drying out (if it's very big you can cook it upside down for a while first).

Thanks for the quick responses.
Ive always used foil to cook chickens, dont know why, but will put it in soon without the foil

My DH doesn't use foil, he uses one of those stick-it-up-the-arse things.

Not sure exactly how though.

Wisteria · 08/01/2008 11:09

What time do you want it for? If it's for tea you won't want to be putting it in yet (unless it's a mutant chicken that is!)

a rotisserie? You quite often get them as standard in French ovens - does cook chicken beautifully IME.

Sunshinemummy · 08/01/2008 11:13

I don't use foil either as, as Calzone says, the skin goes lovely and crispy. The trick is to absolutely smother it in butter and make sure you give it a really good basting every 20m or so.

NatalieJane · 08/01/2008 11:16

Is that the proper name for it? It is always the stick-it-up-the-arse thing in this house

And, yes, his chicken is always perfect.

annoyingdevil · 08/01/2008 12:22

Just cooked one with no foil - couldn't be arsed to put any on. It looks nice and crispy. The cat gets the skin anyway!

Maidamess · 08/01/2008 12:24

I never use foil either.

I never use foil when cooking a chicken.

I tend to scrunch up butter, bacon, lemon and thyme up and liberally spread all over the chicken inside and out. Never burnt or anything - skin just goes crispy, and the meat juicy.
