Mackies! Proper stuff

I read a review of the 'synthentic' ice-creams that don't actually use any cream in the ingredients but reconsitituted swill, and it said you might as well lick sugared water off the floor.

Beauregard · 06/01/2008 23:15

They sell Movenpick ices at a shopping centre we go to.

Bink · 06/01/2008 23:16

Haagen Dazs's old recipe - I only ever had that it in the States, some 20 years ago now & I'm pretty sure the recipe they sell here is different - had a tiny tiny bit of both grapefruit and pineapple in it. Not enough to taste of either (or for you even to know they were in there without looking at the ingredients), but enough to do some glorious complementary thing with the vanilla.

OverRated · 06/01/2008 23:21

If you are a Nestle boycotter, I think Movenpick are owned by them.

Green & Black's is Cadbury's.

I have no idea which is the best vanilla though. Please report back when you have tried the one you order.

IorekByrnison · 06/01/2008 23:22

Haagen Dazs

QuintessentialShadow · 06/01/2008 23:22

I have decided to order the following:

Green and Blacs
Haagen-Dazs
AND
Kellys Cornish

.... I shall report back...

la la laaaaah

KatyMac · 06/01/2008 23:28

Make your own (not for babies or old peeps)

Lightly whip 1 pint of double cream
Whisk 3 eggs & 3 oz of caster sugar (vanilla sugar makes it lovely) either add vanilla essence or scape a vanilla pod in

Stir together & freeze

Take out of the freezer about half an hour before eating

QuintessentialShadow · 06/01/2008 23:34

Katymac, I am going to have to try that... Do I stir now and then while it is freezing to avoid "frost roses"?

LaDiDaDi · 06/01/2008 23:36

Mackies is best. Yum yum.

KatyMac · 06/01/2008 23:37

I never had

I over whip the eggs & sugar unyil it is very light & creamy - & only lightly whip the cream

KatyMac · 06/01/2008 23:37

Whoops proportions wrong 1/2 pt cream to 3 eggs - SORRY

OverRated · 06/01/2008 23:38

lol aitch!

I might have to make my own now...

QuintessentialShadow · 06/01/2008 23:39

Katymac, how much ice cream does that make? (or is that a silly question)

OP posts:
KatyMac · 06/01/2008 23:42

About 1/3 of a 2l ice cream container (ish??)

You can liquidise fruit and stir it in for ripple (or melted choc)

I find it a bit rich - I like Tescos white ice cream (but I don't tolerate dairy very well)

QuintessentialShadow · 06/01/2008 23:46

Is that recipe comparable to the tesco white? I know it well, the kids like it. But is it suitable for a rather posh-ish grown up supper?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 06/01/2008 23:49

Not at all

I can only have about a dessert spoon of the homemade

I like the Tescos cos it's lighter

But all my guests who get served the H/M ask for the recipe & make it them selves (then I get frantic phone calls - "why can't the children have it exactly?" reply "because of the raw eggs")

But it is truly lovely imo (even if I can only eat a tiny bit)

QuintessentialShadow · 06/01/2008 23:49

Piuh, then I will give it a go. And if I can add some of the cloudberries to the ripple, even better....

Good thread!

You know, I am so unbelievably dense. It's only in the last few months that I've cottoned onto the fact that there's vanilla ice-cream: bright yellow frozen tasteless rock hard el cheapo and nasty and I always hated it.

And then there's Vanilla Ice Cream...the real thing with little vanilla seeds in it all creamy and soft and nothing at all like the other stuff.

So I'm taking notes here because I've only tried a couple of those mentioned so far. What a terrible thing to have to research...oh well, it's got to be done I always used to say I didn't even like ice-cream much before this chance meeting with the real thing.

QuintessentialShadow · 06/01/2008 23:53

and I soooo love your name....

TsarChasm · 06/01/2008 23:56

I'm still getting used to it. It's a new one. Like new shoes...you gotta wear them in.

QuintessentialShadow · 07/01/2008 00:00

True.....

Ummmm... very large part of my job to taste test ice cream so a bit of an expert..

no one has mentioned Waitrose Cornish, 'tis very, very good and incredibly popular with a wide range of people so should please all at a dinner party.

Kelly's very good although there are nicer Cornish brands but hard to get outside cornwall.

Anyone got a Mackies pack to hand? I think it is still made in Scotland but we were asked to quote for making it a few years ago and we are in Cornwall...found that a bit bizarre

hotchocscot · 07/01/2008 00:34

QS, with all the votes for Mackie's on here, are you not going to include it in your chosen taste test list? I would def encourage you to give it a try!!!
