Interesting sandwich/picnic ideas

Dh and I and our two children have membership to a local family attraction and we go most weekends and I often go midweek with the children as well. The idea is it's a free day out, so we try to take sandwiches/a picnic to avoid buying food there. But I am so bored of eating crappy ham sandwiches every week.

So, any ideas for more interesting picnic items would be amazing and also your favourite homemade sandwiches. I feel like I'm in such a rut and we keep buying packet sandwiches or chips on site as they always taste better than whatever crap I've thrown together

Depends how old the kids are, but some other ideas:

  • wraps. Cook thin, chicken or pork schnitzel and it makes an alternative filling with salad
  • Hamburgers or chicken burgers
  • Thermos do a wider mouth version for food, so you have any number of hot food inside. Stew, curry, cous cous, biriyani, paella or even just hot chicken drumsticks which have a sticky, teriyaki sauce or BBQ flavouring
  • As a sandwich filling, I love grated carrot and cheese, or carrot, humous and rocket. Or homous, falafel and salad.
  • Vietnamese summer rolls are really healthy. Lots of youtube videos on how to wrap them. I'm not vegan, but actually prefer then made with just vegetables and noodles and served with a peanut sauce. You could add in chicken, duck, prawns or tofu.

Some great ideas here, thanks!

@dumpling123 cheese, always cheese but not very much needed if you use other fillings. Tomatoes, onions, apple (especially just with cheese), chutney, mushroom, ham, chorizo, pepperoni. Endless possibilities.

Quiches are a good idea, if you can make pastry, they really don't take long to do. My DM does them with Emmental cheese, Quiche Lorraine etc.

Baguettes with pate and salad are nice - either liver pate or veggie pate.

Pasta or rice salad is good. My DM makes a lovely potato salad which is basically normal way but without the cream/milk and using a French dressing.

Hard boiled eggs are good to have.

I make a chocolate and banana loaf cake (Nigella Lawson's page recipe) which is very easy and packs and travels well.

Savoury muffins or savoury loaf cake is good - I once made a celery and cheese loaf cake which was delicious.
If you have had e.g. pilau (rice meals) or risotto, these can often be brought along for sides.

Oh I forgot and don't think I've seen it here. Filo pastry pie (Greek) - most use potato, feta cheese, mint maybe courgette etc.

Very yummy and packs really well.

Bao buns!

Fill with braised pork and salad of shredded lettuce, grated carrot and chilli sauce

Or Malaysian beef

Or teriyaki chicken

Or anything at all

So easy, so holdable and delicious 🤤

@MyAnacondaMight

How about a theme for each picnic?

Greek style: spanakopita (or spinach and feta sausage rolls…), olives, tzatziki, pita bread.
French style: baguette, brie or chèvre, tapenade, grapes, madeleines.
Spanish style: tortilla, cherry tomatoes, manchego, jamon, bread sticks, almond cake.
Middle Eastern style: grilled chicken skewers, flatbread, hummus, boiled eggs, crudites, baklava.

Great idea 👏

Love picnics!

James martin does a good sandwich recipe that's layers inside a big loaf!

(Also shamelessly following)
