Tinned mackerel fillets

I discovered these the other day. I thought they would be good for Dd who wants to eat more fish.
So what can I do with them for her? They are in brine if it makes a difference.

You can flake them up and use just as you would tinned tuna: on salads, as a sandwich filler, with pasta etc, or you can leave them whole and use them as you might a tinned sardine - served with salad, on toast, etc.

Mackerel pâté can be good.

The French often serve them in a mustard and cream sauce as part of a cold buffet.

You could blitz them with a tub of cream cheese to make mackerel pate, I don't normally use tinned but I'm sure they'd work, just drain off the brine.

I get the ones in tomato sauce and tip them over some cous cous. I have switched from mackerel to herring in tomato sauce though - as the herring has the sustainability msc label which the mackerel used to have but doesn’t any more.

I just eat them out of the tin. Love them!

The ones with tomato sauce are amazing on toast as a lunch 😋😋

My DM used to make mackerel salad pita breads, mackerel salad and our favourite mackerel pasta! (She used olive oil ones and added peas and sweetcorn and a bit of cheese on top!)

I buy sardines with chilli and mix with parsley into hot pasta.

Fish cakes are nice made with tinned fish.

Eat on hot buttered toast.

Quick kedgeree - boil some rice with a drop of curry powder, add some green beans and peas when nearly done, then stir the drained fillets through and top with a hard boiled egg.

Exactly the same, but with a big salad too - healthy & very filling lunch/dinner

Mix with mashed potato, dip in egg then breadcrumbs and fry. Yummy fish cakes!

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 30/03/2022 17:37

I have them on baked potato with a bit of ground pepper.

Mix through pasta with tomatoes (unless you buy the ones in tomato) add raisins, capers, peppers, onion and top with lemon, Parmesan breadcrumbs. A bit like Sicilian sardine pasta, ish.

I like to buy them tinned in sauce then mash them with a fork, mix in the sauce. Usually tomato tor teriyaki. Then put it in a sandwich.

Also nice on toast.

Get the one with tomato sauce and eat it with raw spinach leaves with lemon juice and sea salt on it. You can have a piece of bread with butter with it, or half an avocado sliced.

Personally I prefer the ones in tomato sauce to the ones in plain oil.

Make a 3 bean salad (tin of 3 bean mix, sweetcorn, red pepper, splash of olive oil, splash of wine/cider vinegar fresh parsley if you like) and flake the mackerel to eat with it. Delicious.
