You know those blocks of frozen puff pastry...

What can I do with them?

Am trying to use all the stock I have in freezer/cupboards etc (New Year, New Budget courtesy of aborted-Asda trip the other day )

Am wanting to do main-meal recipes.

Have looked on-line but all look a bit poncey (wilted spinach, salmon and goats cheese eg) with fridge ingredients I don't have.

Any ideas much appreciated!

BettySpaghetti · 06/01/2008 15:10

Some sort of pie with a puff pastry lid (chicken and mushroom?)

08aGreatYearForCarmenere · 06/01/2008 15:11

Any sort of tart - cheese and onion - bacon and cheese - tomato, and so on.
Just lie it flat on a baking sheet, prick all over, except for the edges, then put on your filling!

Scramble · 06/01/2008 15:12

Tart thing.

roll out to 4mm ish. cut to desired tart sizes, just make them squares or rectangles,
half cut through a line 1cm from the edge. Make sure it doesn't go right through.
gently prick the centre bit.
choose topping, thin smear of pesto or sundried tomato paste, topped with slices of tomatoes and a sprinkling of what ever sheese you have. Keep in the middle bit/.

Plenty other tart toppings you could do too.

Sausage plait - roll out and fill with a long sausage made of sausagemeat mixed with salt, pepper and fried onion, cut the outside bits into slanted strips and plait them over the top then bake in the oven.

Can also do the same thing filled with grated cheese and fried onions.

Or you can make apple strudel.

beef wellington mmmmmmmmm

notnowbernard · 06/01/2008 15:18

You lot are great!

Thankyou... just the sort of ideas I was after.

So if I wanted to do a simple cheee and onion thing, would I need to mix the ingredients with milk or egg or anything?

make giant vol-u-vonts and fill them with your fave mayo or cream sauce filling.
Beef wellington... roll our squares of pastry put a slice of pate in the middle then a slice of beef steak (preferably fillet) then fold ove the pastry, seal and cook. Serve with a rich red wine sauce (use up the wine as well).
Sausage rolls, quickest way I have found is to roll out pastry into a long thin rectangle then line up skinless sausages down the middle, dampen one long edge and roll the whole length and seal. Cut the foot long sausage roll to length, and bake.
With the scrap bits after making main, carefully stack the pieces (dont scrunch together as you could lose the layers) and re roll, smear with marmite and fold in half, roll again then cut into thin strips about 3" long, give each strip a twist and bake. Home made Twigletts.
Cake... roll out smear to 1/2" of edge with jam the fold in half and roll again (not to thin) bake, when cooked top with iceing sugar.
DS1 has just come in will ask him for suggestions.
DS1 is home will ask him.

No just mix up grated cheese with fried onion and a bit of salt and pepper.

Oenophile · 06/01/2008 15:26

Always make chicken pies with this - chop and fry chicken breast, some bacon bits, mushrooms, bind with a white sauce using the cooking juices, top with the pastry and bake. Delicious and enough for two adults.

Apple turnovers - sliced apple and sugar on a square of pastry, fold over to make rectangles, seal by water/pinching, glaze with eggwhite (or don't bother) - bake for 20 mins or so and serve with whipped cream.

My daughter, very fussy, likes squares of crisp puff pastry plain alongside her meat etc and it is quite tasty.

Also as others said - just fill with cheese to make 'pasties' - the combination of melting cheese and crisp pastry is to die for and very filling. Can wrap a whole camembert in PP and bake, serve with that left over cranberry sauce and it's delightful.

roll out and bake an oblong, then when it's done, split it in two, spread with strawberry or raspberry jam, fill it with whipped cream, put them together and sprinkle a bit of icing sugar on and cut into slices

Used mine up making a winter vegetable pie - carrots, parsnips, sweet potato etc. in cheese sauce in lasagne dish with puff pastry top. I thought it was quite impressive but DP didn't like my addition of sprouts! Looking back poss not best choice

Blu · 07/01/2008 13:44

Vegetable Tarte tatin;

fry / caramelise some veg in the bottom of an oven'proof hob-proof dish - onions, courgettes, pepper, sweet potato, aubergine etc are all good. Fry / caramelise with a little sugar and vinegar, herbs, salt and pepper

Cover and roast for 30 mins.

roll out puff pastry, put on top of veg, bake uncovered for as long as the pastry takes.

Turn out - i.e serve upside down, with veg on top.

If you have laid the veg out nicely, this can look spectacular and v posh, but is v cheap and simple!

Not particularly fancy, but nice as a pizza base : passata, toppings of whatever you have and cheddar/mozzarella. Oven for 20 minutes. Really lovely cold.
