Can I buy fresh yeast from anywhere?

Dh has been at home the last couple of weeks, between contracts.
He has now developed a passion for baking and is making pretty good bread. But I think it would be even better with 'proper' yeast.

But where do I buy it now?

I think you can ask at the in store bakery bit of Tescos.

Oh, we don't use Tesco's, argument with very rude manager at our local store a while ago.

Wonder if Sainsbury's do then.

Thanx

How bizarre, was just thinking today that you never see fresh yeast anywhere, yet when I was a kid it used to be quite common (and I aint that old!)

just ask for some yeast at a bakery. used to sell it at safeway from the bakery, tho i could never find the code for it. it was quiet cheap as well if i remember correctly.

morrison's ??

I think you can ask for it at any bakery, or you could years ago. Would they have changed?

janeybops · 20/11/2004 20:43

When I was younger I always bought it at the local bakers but these are rare now.

My Mum gets hers from a small independent bakery (i.e. not a supermarket) Do you have any of those around?

Branster · 20/11/2004 20:53

I used to send DH to a private bakery, miles away from here. it was very, very cheap but the only place you could buy it was that one. None of the other independent bakeries around here would sell it to me and can't understand why.
We found the place just by driving around and stopping at bakery shops.

i get mine from my local independent health food shop

you can catch a wild yeast and make a sourdough starter that you can use again and again, if you're into that kind of thing. Takes a bit of committment but worth it for the taste imo
