Moomina, I have to disagree. Maybe you have been unlucky because there certainly are some crappy Chinese restaraunts around, but that's probably also the case in England isn't it?
What I meant was that Chinese food in America is just a different animal (as it were) than Chinese food in England. I wouldn't say it was any better or worse, it's just different somehow. It has a different flavour that never quite recaptures the Chinese takeaways of my childhood.
I have had some amazing Chinese food in America. Specifically in Chinatown in New York. At a place called (unfortunately) Big Wong, you can get a plate of rice and roast duck or roast pork at lunchtime for $3 and it's delicious.
Besides that I've had fabulous Peking Duck (kind of like crispy duck), razor clams in black bean sauce, snails in black bean sauce, pan fried noodles, dim sum, spicy salt and pepper shrimp and squid, tofu, etc...
The food's not as good at your average suburban takeaway obviously, but if you pick right you can still get some good stuff. Chicken and broccoli is probably the most popular (it's in oyster sauce). Crab rangoon is a totally American invention - it's deep fried dumplings that are stuffed with a mixture of crab and cream cheese. Absolutley terrible for you, but yummy.
