Out of date sliced beef

worriedatthistime · 14/03/2022 13:40

Just ate couple bites out of date roast beef
Dh made lunch and i didn't think I had bought sliced beef this week
So a packet was in back of fridge apparently and he doesn't check dates as apparently why would it be in there?? I hadn't noticed it but the rest of us all check dates before we eat and try and open meat with soonest date etc
I took a bite only and spat it out but dh ate a whole sandwich. Toasted with cheese so said it tasted ok but couldn't really taste it anyway with the cheese he puts in
Are we likely to be ill ?
I looked at the packet and it was best before 7 days ago not just 1/2 days
Who doesn't check dates before they eat

Yes, you should always check the dates on food before eating. As you spat the beef out you should be ok.

Thinkingblonde · 14/03/2022 14:04

7 days is pushing it, maybe ok up to 4/5days. If it’s already opened I Chuck after 3 days but unopened keep it a bit longer.
I also do the Thinking blonde sniff test. Never fails. My nose is legendary.

worriedatthistime · 14/03/2022 14:04

Was that post supposed to help?"
?? Yes its irresponsible he didn't check as we don't normally have stuff in there that is out of date as i normally check regularly but I am out of action at the moment as unwell so its not been able to keep a check as normal
The kids even check sell by dates so I don't know why he didn't look properly I think he wrongly just assumed
I am fuming at him as I am already unwell and last thing I need is a bout of food poisoning

@Thinkingblonde it was unopened , opened we usually use within 2 days always and I am always religious at checking dates
As sometimes my tesco order will arrive and it has short dated food on or even use by that day when its mean't to have 5 plus
I spat it out but he ate it

Cooked beef? Smells OK-ish? I would eat it.

Beachsidesunset · 14/03/2022 14:23

'Best before' not 'use by'? You'll be fine.

BertieBotts · 14/03/2022 14:43

It will be fine, you probably wouldn't be ill even if you did eat it. They are just precautionary and unless your DH has no sense of smell it would have been totally obvious when he opened the packet if the beef was off.

nocoolnamesleft · 14/03/2022 14:49

Beef significantly safer than chicken or pork. If it didn't smell off, likely to be fine.

Thinkingblonde · 14/03/2022 15:01

Sorry to hear you’re unwell, in your case you’re better sticking on the side of caution.
If it tastes off, smells sour, or looks slimy or has a green tinge bin it.

Notajogger · 14/03/2022 15:04

Those pre-packed ones usually have long dates (like ham etc) so they're obviously quite well preserved in the first place. We've got a pack of ham in the fridge, forgot it was there, it's a week past the date but smells/tastes fine so we're eating it!

Minikievs · 14/03/2022 15:14

If it was unopened, I'd still have eaten it

Bowlofhotslop · 14/03/2022 15:27

You can’t smell food poisoning bacteria so the sniff test is pointless. Use by dates aren’t just made up, companies are required to test the products for pathogens and that’s the date they can guarantee safety up to. Listeria is probably the most likely to cause illness in this scenario but symptoms could start anywhere from 1-90 days after eating (generally one to two weeks) and you’d be pretty unlucky to have caught it after one bite which was spat out.

worriedatthistime · 14/03/2022 15:42

@BertieBotts he has a sense of smell just a brain he lacks
He ate a whole slice said it tasted fine , smelt fine but i am aware bacteria doesn't always spoil things so I am normally super cautious with things and shop weekly and use all up, but one week out and it all goes to pot
I guess all we can do is just see how we are and call 111 if we become ill and have any concerns
Luckily I never swallowed any, not sure he didn't give poor dog a slice but then hes been known to eat out of a bin before

Sorry, you said 'Best Before' in your OP. Anyway, the body is very good at quickly ejecting spoiled food so if you're feeling fine a few days later, then I'm sure it's okay. Mistakes happen, forgive him 🙂

worriedatthistime · 14/03/2022 17:31

@Beachsidesunset your right i did put best before should of been use by
He is forgiven but also under strict instructions to be more careful plus he ate more than me so guess he will become more ill
Also hate throwing food away and annoyed we missed it as i try to use up all as can't afford fo be throwing stuff out
