dh & i disagree on how to do mashed potato, i like it with a bit of butter and done with the masher, but when he did it, he whizzed it down with the hand blender so it was like a paste, i couldn't eat it without retching (sorry tmi), and he got a bit cross.

so, how do you like yours?

no you can't whizz mashed potato because it becomes glutinous .. that's pureed potato and not mash .. tell DH to stop immediately .. euwwww

the clue is in the name really

(like ours with butter, milk and a bit of cream of horseradish )

MrsBadger · 05/01/2008 11:20

no, never blend it - it does somethign weird to the starch

lots of milk if with dryish meal, butter only it it's going to be sopping up gravy

numptysmummy · 05/01/2008 11:20

mashed with a spot of milk, butter and plenty of pepper.

TrinityRhinosDhWonHerAnIPOD · 05/01/2008 11:21

ewwww no tell him he is wrong

it's called MASHED potato for a reason

I have never been able to get it totally right to my liking but you should really make purplepilows cheese and potato pie, now that is GORGEOUS!!!

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 05/01/2008 11:21

i only have it as a rare treat but just mashed with a masher with butter and milk

not very keen on the olive oil and sundried tomato variants

i don't have it that often cos mashing alters the gi i think and makes it too quickly absorbed

lucykate · 05/01/2008 11:23

yay!, i was right, dh - wrong

it was like wallpaper paste

suppose i should just be glad he did some cooking for a change, but even so, i could not bring myself to eat it, dc's wouldn't touch it either

You take floury potatoes and you peel them and boil them until they are cooked. Then you drain them thoroughly and put them back on the heat for a few seconds to ensure they are very dry. Then you mash them preferably with a potato ricer or mouli legume. then stir in a little heated cream, some salt, white pepper and butter.

If you use a hand blender the gluten in the potato becomes stretched and strengthens and they go like wall paper paste.

Hulababy · 05/01/2008 11:25

I do mine with a potato ricer.

Microwave potatoes in skin
Put through ricer
Stir in some butter and/or milk
We sometimes add mustard, parsely, or some other extra flavouring depending on type of mash we are having.

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 05/01/2008 11:25

Barf at blended potatoes.

Need a potato ricer and LOTS of anchor butter.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 05/01/2008 11:26

always amazes me how mn comes up with a 100 variants on the simplest of things lol

08aGreatYearForCarmenere · 05/01/2008 11:29

There is a reason that someone went to the trouble of inventing a potato ricer though, they do make incredibly smooth mashed potatoes. In fact I am going to buy one today as I have no idea where my original one is.

RubberDuck · 05/01/2008 11:34

Potato ricers are awesome... I try and describe a masher to an american friend of mine (like a small ski pole, lol) and she looks at me like I'm completely insane for even trying to mash potato that way .

Staceym21AtLast · 05/01/2008 11:41

my mum has a potato ricer and its brilliant, cant get hold of another one tho, cant find them, i use a normal masher, couldnt purree it did it once for ds when weaning then realised how disgusting it was, never again!

moljam · 05/01/2008 11:42

we use soya margerine and little bit of goats milk(ds cant have cows),and potato masher.very creamy and yummy.

Blandmum · 05/01/2008 11:48

Mashed with a hand masher, with butter and full fat milk

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 05/01/2008 11:48

You can't find them Stacey?!

MrsBadger · 05/01/2008 11:49

Staceym21AtLast · 05/01/2008 11:52

mum got hers for about £4 from ikea and we kept looking there, might get one on the net i suppose, will have to look into how much money i've got!

shrooms · 05/01/2008 14:22

Nice and smooth and fluffy, with butter beans!
I scrub the potatoes but don't peel them, then cut up and boil in as little water as possible with a can of butter beans, till very tender.

Then add a lump of marg, salt, pepper and some soy milk, and mash very well with a masher, before stirring with a wooden spoon to bring together.

mom2latinoboys · 05/01/2008 15:24

I do mine with a hand mixer and they are always fluffy it is a delicate balance of the liquid you add, and for how long you mix them. I like to do mine with a crushed clove of garlic, butter, salt and pepper, and a little milk.
