Plain Sponge Cake

Hello!

My DD wants a red Marshall paw patrol cake for her birthday and I got a quote from a proper cake shop but it's more than I can afford Sad

I'm pretty handy but always make a dreadful, dense cake.

I've seen ready to decorate cakes (always white icing!) but she wants a red cake. Is it possible to get plain sponges for me to stack and decorate?

Thanks you!

Yes, just buy the plain Victoria sponges from Tesco’s or Asda or wherever and decorate them! They have buttercream and jam in middle, but usually nothing or just icing sugar on top.

Watch Cupcake Jemma. Her videos are fantastic. I followed this video a few weeks ago and honestly, I couldn't believe the difference in my cakes! They were so springy and bouncy and just incredible. Mine are usually dense, too.

That will work? Fab!

Should I trim them to make them flat - they're normally a bit risen in the middle

@TokenGinger

Oh yes, I definitely will, thank you!

You're welcome. I genuinely didn't realise how much of a difference the mixing technique and order of ingredients makes. I now put my food colouring in with the wet ingredients to save overbeating once the flour is in.

If you don't have red food gel already, Colour Splash is great and not expensive. Around £2 on Amazon. Much better than liquid colouring xx
