Thought I'd be adventurous and bought them in the greengrocer today. Now I realise I have no idea what I do with them. Eat them whole, peel them, what?? And can I give them to dd (18m)?

sharon fruit eat whole

pomegranate: cut in quarters and pick the seeds out from the pith (which is v bitter), takes a while but then you have a bowlful of deliciousness...

my ds (1 year) loves both

Thanks sophable

On my first encounter with a kiwi fruit, some years ago, I peeled it and took the pips out! .. but then I didn't have the benefit of mumsnet.

It's important to know what type of sharon fruit you have. If it's the slightly smaller one (about the size of a clementine) that's flatter rather than rounder, then it's ripe when it's hard and you can eat it like an apple (skin's a bit tough so might be worth peeling). However, if the sharon fruit is the larger one that's sort of pointy shaped at the top, then it's really really important that it's very soft before you eat it otherwise it will make your mouth go all funny (not dangerous, just really really weird sensation). If you have that kind, just suck the innards out. yummm.

Cut the pomegranate in half and bash the skin side with a wooden spoon so the seeds drop out. I like it with ice cream or porridge.
