What do you eat instead?

My kids don't like pancakes Shock

I'm sure they aren't the only ones. If you don't like pancakes, what do you eat on Shrove Tuesday please? Or is it just another normal day for you?

What about scotch pancakes instead? They're sweet and you could eat them with butter and jam or syrup or Nutella, etc

RubyRedRoses · 19/02/2022 09:26

Are they also called drop scones? I think I made those in Home Economics at school!

Yorkshire pudding has the same ingredients. You could make toad in the hole a tradition instead.

RubyRedRoses · 19/02/2022 09:26

They were lovely BTW and I'll look up the recipe, thank you Smile

Hot cross buns? Crumpets?
Do your own pizza toppings?
Donuts/churros?

I am Scottish and have never ever called them drop scones! They are also known by that name though Grin
RubyRedRoses · 19/02/2022 09:29

😂😂😂 is "drop scones" a posh term then? I grew up in NI and am not posh! Think the HE teacher may have been, or aspiring to be, bless her

They'd love it if I made it make your own pizza day tbh. They have that one day of the week usually, but I could make it somehow...shrovey

I was taught 'drop scones' as the name for them in 1980s Home Economics. I prefer them to pancakes.

We do like pancakes, but have also adopted a New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition called king cake. Obviously the real thing is made from scratch, but you can also make it with the cinnamon roll dough that comes in the twisty tubes, sliced into rings and arranged upright in a cake tin. Then cover in water icing and decorate with sprinkles.

We always do crispy duck pancakes, the Chinese type ones.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 19/02/2022 09:35

It’s not compulsory, you can eat whatever you want.

If you’re looking to replace and have a family tradition just replace pancakes with whatever you all like. Whatever you have, enjoy

Beth13579 · 19/02/2022 09:42

Just don't eat pancakes?

Cannelloni?
Fajitas?
(Actually you can make a cannelloni type oven bake substituting either homemade pancakes or fajita wraps for the pasta tubes.).

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 19/02/2022 09:46

Ok I'm from NI so do you mean like bog standard Ormo pancakes or crepe style? I make crepes (no sugar), let them cool and then make spring rolls with them that I shove in the oven. Obviously for dinner rather than breakfast Grin

dementedpixie · 19/02/2022 09:48

Have never heard of an Ormo pancake

RubyRedRoses · 19/02/2022 10:09

I know Ormo pancakes well!

I mean homemade pancakes. They don't like them - although I make the fluffy American type. Maybe I'll try crepes actually...

@dementedpixie Ormo is a brand of pancakes and various (delicious) breads in NI!

Yes make crepes, American style thick pancakes are nowhere near as nice.

Thanks for reminding me about Shrove Tuesday. 1st March this year, so a week tomorrow. I will plan accordingly.

CornishGem1975 · 22/02/2022 15:56

Just don't bother?

miltonj · 22/02/2022 18:59

Yeah crepes will change the game! I struggle to see how anyone could dislike them. They're just a soft warm vessel for an unreasonable amount of Nutella Grin

Georgyporky · 22/02/2022 19:33

If you trying to follow a religious tradition & use up flour, milk & eggs, you could make pasta & a creamy sauce.

thentheycameforme · 23/02/2022 09:24

You could have something traditionally Welsh as it's also st David's day?
